I will never trust IMDB ratings and suggestions again...

Seriously, please tell me that this is all a joke... the ratings, the good comments.. is it all a bait for trolls (like the one I'm about to be) and haters (like the one I'm about to seem to be)?

This is one of the worst movies ever made in the history of the world. I don't understand how it can be even called "a movie". Everything is cheap, pointless, messy. Don't get me wrong: the message is clear, the meaning is clear, but everything used to bring this message to the viewer is boring to the point of being irritating (when you manage not to fall asleep).

How can this movie get more than 4 or (top) 5 stars from the people who watched (considering the suggestions on IMDB) "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"? Or "The Adjustment Bureau"? Or "Hereafter"? 2001? Lynch movies... Cronenberg movies... Kubrick movies...

This is the first time in my life I troll like this but I'm seeing comments like "best movie ever", "personal fav.", "top 5", etc... Please explain to me so I can dream of improving myself and join the club... Or poor me I will have to find another website to trust for rating and suggestions.

Thanks

If this is your interpretation of The Fountain, DO NOT see Tree of Life.

Whether I'm just not funny or you just don't have a sense of humor is up for interpretation.

It is very simple.

The music and the message. Achieve eternal life through death. This movie presented it in a beautiful way. I do love a women and therefore can I also relate to the anxiety Tommy feels. But ofc the emotional response doesnt aply to everyone. The emotional aftermath i felt was the same as after the tree of life. It makes me happy and calm.

This movie is not for everyone. Also, if you do not like watching movies more than once, this is not the movie for you. The first time I watched this film, I too, found it somewhat boring and though it had pretty visuals and good actors, I just couldn't get into it.

I decided to give it another chance and it's now my number one movie. You have to be able to connect to this film in some emotional context to completely understand some of the symbolic meanings behind it. I've watched this film over 15 times and now want to go home and watch it again. I love it!

And just to put it into perspective, I found Tree of Life to be extremely boring even after a second viewing. Not saying that it was a bad film, but I just think I haven't lived enough of my life to fully comprehend its meaning.

I'm a one woman for the rest of my life kind of guy. I'm only 23 years old, but consider my life-long goal to be married, with 2/3 kids, and a house with a white picket fence. The struggle Hugh Jackman's character goes through to find the cure for his wife's cancer is unreal. You have to realize that his "past" is playing relative to the book his wife was writing and the future is him taking his wife in tree form to the Nebula she speaks of through out the film (which was represented as a dying star being reborn). The tree resembles the seed he buries on top of her grave at the end of the movie.

I would go to great lengths to help my girlfriend in any way that I can and that's one of the main aspects The Fountain portrays. He tries to go impossible lengths to keep her alive, but comes to the realization the only way he can be with her, is through death.

This isn't the only interpretation of the film either, but this is what I got out of it. If you have the time, give it another shot. I'm glad I did.

Well my friend thats what makes all forms of art wonderful, people can take from it what their souls need. People shouldn't be attacked for feeling, our souls feed off feelings good and bad. It shapes us as people and if we resist it, we break.

I watch all kinds of films, and I can sit through some pretty bad and/or boring stuff, but this... I think people who defend this film are so taken b its story, visuals, themes, cast, etc..., they are ignoring the fact that it is just poorly made. The film is the definition of tedium. Its repetitious moments, being so tedious the first time around, are excruciating to sit through. It is pure pretentiousness. I remember thinking it looked interesting based on the previous, and sadly, taking my sister and parents with me to see it. How embarrassing that was. What torture it was. I like the cast, and when I try to describe the film to others to warn them away, I realize myself that it sounds like a good movie, it is just such a failed execution. And, maybe the book is written just as poorly, I don't know (I'm pretty sure I read that it was based on a novel), but this could have been a fascinating movie. It just, wasn't. It was nauseating.

I'm the same way about Lynch though... The fact that you list "Lynch movies" in a way that could possibly be used as a quantitative measure of the value of a film (with "cheap, pointless, messy" as a few of your criticisms) speaks of your own appreciation for unforgivably intentionally ridiculous steaming piles of crap. So even if this IS that bad, which most of the people here obviously didn't find it to be, it's clear that you're convinced of an entitlement to your own flawed opinion, and perhaps you should accept that others are convinced of the same.
For me this movie was a pretty wild ride through the first viewing... confusing, bouncing all over the world and through centuries of timeline. Still fascinating, though -- visually engaging, with excellent performances from Hugh Jackman and the lovely Rachel Weisz (who, I must admit, I will watch ANYTHING in at least twice) and a brilliant, powerful soundtrack.
Another statement of yours that should be examined -- you claim that you get the film ("the message is clear, the meaning is clear") so does Aronofsky not at LEAST get partial credit in your assessment for attempting such an enormous conceptual undertaking in one film?
Suggestions for improving yourself and joining the club: watch the film one more time, in a better mood and with a better snack, and perhaps (as was in my case) with someone you're falling in love with. And maybe think about the scene with the seedpod a little more.

I found the film clichéd, flat, cheap, pompous, corny, naïve and lacking in depth, and as such all the praise definitely seems quite puzzling.

The acting was terrible, I have no idea how someone can call it great. Yeah, maybe in Hollywood context it wasn't that awful, but that's not saying much, since in most Hollywood movies no one can act to save their lives.

At times the film was campy enough to almost be funny.

Are you overly pretentious or just trolling? Because no intelligent person would write a post like that.

It just amazes me how much debating skills have degraded. Now, every argument is either (like your post) "I hated this. Everyone that loves it is an idiot" or "I loved this. Everyone that hates it is an idiot." It's a sad commentary on current affairs. So many people lack empathy and the ability to respect any differing opinions anymore.

I absolutely hated 2001. Do I bitch about people loving the movie? No. I can tell the film has artistic merits, but they just weren't for me. Unlike you, I don't make absolute comments about a subjective art form, and claim anyone that sees it differently from me is an idiot.
