Name a series finale you liked...

I think it must be quite a challenge to tie up loose ends and write a satifying ending to a long running series solely because it hardly ever happens. The final shows for Seinfeld, Roseanne, Lost, Sopranos all disappointed their fans. 24 was Ok...are there any others?

IndyMan I forgot about Life on Mars (UK). Such a great ending to a great series. Watched only one ep of the US version. Terrible show.

My PBS station is just now airing Ashes to Ashes. I was so surprised to see the gang back. Love the Guv! One of my all time favorite tv characters. I think Ashes may be even better than Mars.

Oh and Monk. I watched the show off and on over the years but loved the finale. That one was written for fans.

January -- The ground is full of slush and sleet and I can barely feel my feet.

well any series finale is sad, cuz it's the end, so of course there will be some disappointment..

Finale's I Liked:

THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW

EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND

FRIENDS

FRASIER

THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW

NEWHART

Three's Company

reply

It's an animated series, but I loved the Grand Finale to Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as the finale for the DCAU.

Others:

That 70's Show
Monk
Star Trek Voyager
Home Improvement
Lois and Clark

And Smallville is in it's last season. If Darkseid does approach and he and Supes have a knock-down drag-out fight, then that will be awesome.

reply

M.A.S.H. I think was the best

also,
Star Trek Voyager
Monk was good
Friends
Mary Tyler Moore
Newhart
24 was okay for the time that had to rap it up (Movie???)
Buffy's was good
Angel (upsetting) they had to rap it up fast it made me cry & cry & cry!!!!
Star Trek NG was good.
DS9 started out good then turned crappy.

The worst--
Lost was horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Battlestar was just okay
Quantum Leap -- horrible
Saving Grace not good at all
Seinfeld was dumb

I think in the case of Quantum Leap they didn't know they were being cancelled, and a season finale turned into a series finale, which is usually never satisfying. I have mixed feelings on the Saving Grace finale. I bought season 3 but haven't watched it yet, as I thought I needed a little time before reviewing it to form a good opinion. In their case, they new well in advance they were being cancelled before writing or filming the final episodes, so maybe the 2nd time around will make a bit more sense.

I think they tweaked the finale to tie it up a bit (like the things with Beth and who's leaping Sam), but you're right, they didn't know they were being canceled so they had to come up with something fast. That show was amazing, I can't believe it only got 5 seasons.

There, I fixed that for you.

A lot of people LOVED the finales of those shows you mentioned. I particularly loved the ending of LOST, Seinfeld and Roseanne.

reply

Life On Mars the U.S. version worked for a series that lasted 17 ep. If it had lasted as long like Lost, people would not have been happy. That series was like one big twilight zone ep.

Deep Space 9 was weird because the series started with Sisko but it did not end with him. Was he even in the last hour?

yeah

reply

Twin Peaks!

I loved the end, it was crazy and left everything unwound.

Medium could have easily done something completely odd like that. They even have an Agent Cooper!

I liked the ends of Buffy, Friends, Angel, Dollhouse, Charmed, Sledge Hammer!, Forever Knight...a lot of shows I know just quit without an ending too...I would have preferred it to the Joe's death ending of Medium.

the Quantum Leap finale seemed fine, it did seem like a series finale... Lost there were still some unanswered questions but overall it was still good...

I think the quantum leap finale gave it a sad quality. You know he never returns home, which was always the ultimate hope for fans who invested emotionally in the show. That ending meant that he would leap around in other people's bodies for the rest of his life and never find his way home.

I would love for them to now do a re-union movie of Quantum Leap and maybe give it proper closure.

Mad About You
Cheers
Frasier
ER (although all the original characters were gone at that point)

The ones that got gypped of a proper series ending:
My Name Is Earl
Just Shoot Me

Series that were pulled too soon:
Help Me Help You
Miss Guided (Love Judy Greer!)

Well, the season finale of Medium may honestly be my most favorite I've ever seen. Admittedly, I don't watch much tv, but, still. . .

reply

The whole finale season of Cheers was one big send-off. And the finale episode itself was great.

Also NYPD Blue was good.

reply

well i'm sure Sam eventually returned him, i think it just meant he didn't as soon as he had wanted to, not right away.. loved Quantum Leap.. that was like the best show until Lost came around..

I liked most of the series finale of medium though i will admit that it made me cry HUGE. But among my favourite finales, I'd have to said Friends, Will & Grace, Shark, and i know there are a few others but those are the ones that came to me just now.

however, one of the ones i HATED the most was Tru Calling. they just left it in the middle, didnt even give them a farewell episode

from The ULTIMATE MOVIE BUFF!

I thought Three's Company was the worse ever. Rushed it so badly to get to their awful Three's Acrowd show.

Now that I saw Medium, it disappointed me more than Three's Company

Frasier was not all that great either. It's hard to make a final, but Medium's final was like somebody shredded the script then tried to put it back together.

sooooooo for the bright side

I liked Cheers, The Bob Newhart Show, and I can't think of anything else.

spoiler below for monk

Monk was okay, but the professor (Coach) shooting himself was crappy.

reply

oh yea i hate the ones where they don't end it, the cliffhangers, because networks just cancelled it without notice..
