Cameron??? How about a woman who can actually act!?

You have Colin Firth the Magnificent...you have Alan Rickman the Superb...and then you have Cameron Diaz!?!!!! You need a female with some acting chops to make it alongside these two guys. And face it - that is just NOT Ms. Diaz.

Alison Elliott, Gillian Anderson, Kate Winslett, Julianne Moore....the list goes on and on of better, no , MUCH better actresses out there. I loved this movie back when Michael Caine, Shirley MacLaine and Herbert Lom did it. And I was really looking forward to the remake with Firth as Caine's character. But, please, please find someone else to be Ms. MacLaine's lovable amateur. No, I don't think Renee would be a good choice - critics would say it's Bridget Jones all over again, which it isn't.

No connection to X-Men...

Just thieves and romance thrown in.

i'm now certain that there is a hollywood conspiracy to destroy every treasured movie moment of my childhood, first they cast Mark Wahlberg (!) in Charade (i can't even remember its new title); then they cast Uma as Emma Peel

i think Diaz is an awful choice. i'm not asking for a Shirley Maclaine clone, just someone more graceful. i wouln't have minded Amy Adams or Natalie Portman—anyone with some charm. hell, i'll take Mila Kunis—admittedly, she's short, but that's why god made appleboxes and Louboutins

even better, wait another 10 years. then one of 2 things would happen : Hailee Steinfeld will be old enough to do it—or i'll be dead. either prosepect would be better than this

I just found out about this movie because of rickman. I was just thinking how promising it looks but then i saw her name=/ but she's just one person, maybe she won't ruin the whole thing for me...fingers crossed.

reply

I don't dislike her acting per se I just don't "feel" her in this role. I hope I end up being wrong but I would be sorely disappointing disliking a movie with Colin Firth AND Alan Rickman. Kate Winslet would be interesting to see portray that character.

reply

Do you really think Kate Winslet would be more believable as a down home good ol' girl Texas steer roper than Cameron Diaz? I'm not a big fan of Ms Diaz, but I don't think it will take much acting on her part to fit the role.

reply

I didn't say I'd prefer her, just that it'd be interesting.

It may not take Cameron to much effort to play the part but I prefer the actors I'm watching put in a little effort. But we'll see. I hope she surprises everyone.

reply

She was very good, I thought she was very good, in Her Sister's Keeper, In Her Shoes and showed comedic skills especially in The Holiday. I'm not worried, as someone else said, she's not Heather Graham!

reply

In this movie, she totally over-acts! I saw it last night (in pre-release viewing)and she is so corny! Firth is excellent, despite a farcial remake of a good movie, but the movie, as a whole, is dragged down by Diaz.

reply

That's disappointing to hear about Diaz, I wasn't too happy to hear that she was gonna be in this but was ready to give her a chance anyway.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. So, how does Gambit compare to say, The Ladykillers remake? Is the comedy good? How is Alan Rickman? What's his character like? Does he get a lot of screen time? Does Stanley Tucci have many scenes?

reply

I did not see the Ladykillers remake, sorry! Rickman does a great job, plenty of screen time. I personally didn't like Tucci's character, a little overbearing for me. As for the comedy, I would call it slapstick or farcial. I know that is where the Coen Bros. wanted to go, and God knows, who am I to criticize them, just not my cup of tea. To me, the bit part who stole the show was Cloris Leachman. Very small part, but loved her!

reply

Hm, wondering if there's any suggestive scenes, or scenes worth watching (spoiler tags please).

Cameron has great comedic chops, from her debut in The Mask to My Best Friends Wedding to There's Something About Mary to hell, even the Charlie's Angels movies. Not the greatest selection of films (well two of them are pretty great) but Cameron is usually the highlight of the film, she's no MacLaine but she is a talented comedic actress with a great star presence. Just be glad she's not cast in a dramatic picture like she was in Vanilla Sky, now that was a bad performance.

reply

Cameron Diaz! In tis role.

If I were Shirley Maclaine I would be pissed! She had so much charm. But CD, yuck. She's a stick figure with no class, no charm, just the willingness to be slutty.

reply

Aren't we all forgetting a little masterpiece called "Being John Malkovich"

reply

Yeah I was all in until I saw her name.

reply

So disappointed, but given that originally it was Jennifer Aniston, I think we got the lesser of 2 evils. It's just disappointing that such mediocrity manages to score screen time alongside two of the absolute greats.

reply

I'd vote for Rosamund Pike, although there are many other female actors who could do the role more justice than Cameron Diaz ever will.
