Cameron??? How about a woman who can actually act!?

You have Colin Firth the Magnificent...you have Alan Rickman the Superb...and then you have Cameron Diaz!?!!!! You need a female with some acting chops to make it alongside these two guys. And face it - that is just NOT Ms. Diaz.

Alison Elliott, Gillian Anderson, Kate Winslett, Julianne Moore....the list goes on and on of better, no , MUCH better actresses out there. I loved this movie back when Michael Caine, Shirley MacLaine and Herbert Lom did it. And I was really looking forward to the remake with Firth as Caine's character. But, please, please find someone else to be Ms. MacLaine's lovable amateur. No, I don't think Renee would be a good choice - critics would say it's Bridget Jones all over again, which it isn't.

No connection to X-Men...

Just thieves and romance thrown in.

Well I don't know much about Cameron Diaz but she has just been voted best female star in this article.

Diaz has proven to audiences that she can take on any role," says Mitch Neuhauser, the group's managing director.
Cameron Diaz has been named the female star of the year by CinemaCon, the group's managing director Mitch Neuhauser announced Monday.

She'll pick up her award at a Columbia Pictures event on March 30, held during CinemaCon, which runs March 28 to 31 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

“Since making her debut on the big screen in The Mask, Cameron Diaz has continued to capture the attention of audiences around the world with her inescapable charm, innate comedic timing, and unparalleled screen presence,” Neuhauser said in a statement. “From the outrageously comedic There’s Something About Mary, to the action packed Charlie’s Angels, and the critically acclaimed Being John Malkovich, Diaz has proven to audiences that she can take on any role and we are thrilled to be able to present such a remarkable actress with the ‘CinemaCon Female Star of the Year Award.’”

Diaz co-stars alongside Justin Timberlake in Columbia Pictures' Bad Teacher, due in theaters June 24. The film is directed by Jake Kasdan, written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg and produced by Jimmy Miller and David Householter.

She begins production on the Coen Brothers’ remake of the crime comedy Gambit in April, starring opposite Colin Firth.

That article is total *beep* probably paid for by a publicist, because i've never been impressed by her. She caused Gangs of New York, which was a terrific film otherwise, to suffer tremendously. Furthermore, all of those movies listed in the article are horrible except for Being John Malkovich, which was funny because they made her into some crazy ugly chick.

She'll be fine, silly.

Yeah, I agree. I really wanted to see this film but the fact that Cameron Diaz is going to be in it makes me want to wait until it comes on cable/video/dvd. Maybe I'll feel diffently when it comes out. *sigh*

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I would put Ms. Diaz' "acting" skills right up there with Ms. Anniston's - slim to none!
I think the casting choice of Ms. Diaz is absolutely abysmal (and she's really not that attractive - certainly not drop-dead gorgeous; not that that should have any bearing on casting her if she were any good, which she is not). With Colin Firth and Alan Rickman and hopefully a killer script and good direction, Ms. Diaz will only drag the film down!
Certainly there is no dearth of women who can act and would bring a depth to this role. Think Rene Russo (although probably too close to the Thomas Crown Affair), Diane Ladd, NO 20-ish ladies (way too young); sorry, it's late, and I'm drawing a blank.
Anyway, wanted to offer my 2-1/2 cents and two thumbs down on the choice of Ms. Diaz. Simply cannot see it!

I agree. If they wanted a famous face they could have hired Cameron Diaz' best friend Drew Barrymore. I know most of you are going to reply that she can only do stupid chick flicks (I hate them too!) but devine Drew knows how to act in whichever drama, since acting is in her blood. And if I'm not mistaken she got her prizes in the cupboard as evidence. Anyway, she's now behind the camera and it also gives me joy. Good for me.

Wouldn't be that harsh, but I agree - when I saw her on the cast list of a Coen Brothers movie, I thought "What the hell?". Bad fit.
But we'll see. I can't picture her in a Coen film, but... we'll see.

How about we trust the amazing Coen Brothers over and above the laymen? They are very talented and almost never cast the wrong person. SO, I think it will all be okay. Sheesh. The thing to do would be to watch the film before making a decision anyway.

reply

Coen Brothers now have nothing to do with this movie. They wrote the original screenplay and that is all.

reply

Well, in that case, I can not defer to their wisdom of casting. I guess all I can say is: wait and see.

reply

Yes! Thank you. I think the Coen Bros. know movies and casting a tad bit better than anyone on here. I posted something similar on Melancholia's board when people were complaining about Kirsten Dunst being picked by Lars Von Trier... and she just won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. Who knows what Cameron Diaz is capable of with the Bros. at the helms.

Diaz has actually won some acting awards but I don't think this comedy role requires any heavy soul-searching acting anyway. Just comedic timing & she does that masterfully in the Shrek films. I don't think she could blow this film anyway given the rest of the cast. At least not like Heather Graham did in Hope Springs or what's her name in Where the Truth Lies.

reply

that is a very good point, and for what it's worth, i liked her fine in gangs of new york.

reply

She's completely miscasted. Maybe she'll prove me wrong when I actually watch this. She already ruined Gangs of New York for me.. I hope to god she doesn't do the same for Gambit.

What are you doing in my forest? You've come to spoil it, haven't you?

reply

I'm crossing my fingers! i hope she has great chemistry with alan and colin :))
