honestly, i never thought de niro would be him. but at first i thought the next door neighbor was, when he first met emily and how she smiled at him and everything. i thought he would end up being charlie. and being that they never showed him much after, i was saying what would be the point of showing the next door neighbors to begin with? it wouldnt make much sense if they had to do with emily, which i thought the man next door did but apparently didnt

im not sure why a lot of people didnt like this movie. i thought it was very good and better than expected to tell you the truth.

I had my suspicion throughout the film and I kinda figured it out before this but what sealed it for me was when the neighbour was outside with David and was asking him if all is well because he saw him with a shovel coming out the woods, although it was really fast it can easily be missed what he said because David spoke over him.

I thought it was whoever was sleeping in the bed in the basement.

But now I think that bed was Dakota's hiding place.

The movie was spoiled for me before I saw it (I read the end here...my own fault, lol).
However, if it hadn't been spoiled for me, I might have thought Charlie was supernatural or something (like in The Others).

I must be getting slow because the 'twist' that DeNiro was the nutter on the loose came as a surprise to me. Then again, I try not to think too hard while watching films or second-guess the writers so I'm easily surprised.

At first I thought Charlie was some kind of ghost or demon. After a while I suspected he might be the sheriff. I was completely surprised by who he really turned out to be.

"Couldn't care less" = "don't care at all"
"Could care less" = "care at least a little"

I thought it was the ghost of the neigbours dead child.I was so sure the neighbour would say at some point to deniro that we miss Charlie very much and then he would relize it.Anyone thought the same?

I never thought that, because the neighbors' kid was a girl while Emily referred to Charlie as a boy. And I know some women (rarely) go by the name "Charlie" as short for "Charlotte", but Emily used the pronoun "he". So it never occurred to me that Charlie might be the neighbor kid's ghost.

I thought it was some supernatural ghost going into the movie. After it was over it seemed sorta obvious it was her dad. Her asking if she can go to bed now in the basement seems like a giveaway. You'd have to be sharp to figure it out on the first watch tho.

I thought, with the neighbor and sheriff being too obvious, Charlie was the realtor but accepted that it had been the neighbor and then was disappointed when it was revealed to be the father.
