I think its a generation thing

I'm 19, this came out while I was 14 or 15 I think. I've noticed that my generation seems to love this movie and prefer it to the original, and the generations in front of us seem to loathe this movie. I think part of it depends on how much you love the original.

I'm a huge horror fan, and I respect and appreciate the original for being such an important movie for the genre. But I find it kind of corny and boring.

and this one definitely isn't perfect, theres a few things I hate about it
-too many of the characters talk the same. too much cursing
-some of the violence is unnecessarily graphic
-I thought the rape scene was pointless, and it was just added to be shocking

but overall, I LOVE this one and actually prefer it to the original, just my opinion. But I definitely think its a generation thing.

None of my friends (well except one) or me liked this when it came out and we were 13. Now, having watched it several times since I don't think it's as bad as people say but it's very messy. It's basically two films. And the first "film" (the back story) was trashy and annoying. I've said it before but I think they should have had him brought up in a normal family. Like "We need to talk about Kevin". Far creepier and unsettling.

The second "film" was just a generic slasher with unlikeable character after unlikeable character being brutally murdered before the confrontation with Laurie. My major problem with this film is that they made a good 90% of the characters absolutely unbearable (unlike the first film) so you don't even care if they die. With some you actually want them to die. I also didn't like Scout Taylor Compton as Laurie at all. Honestly, the first movie has a better build-up, suspense, better characters, creepier moments, far better music and Michael has an unknown quality to him which made it even more unsettling. In saying that I don't hate the remake. But it could have been so much better and it's a shame.

Im 50 years old and I prefer this version to the original. I love John Carpenter, but this version delves more into the psychological aspects of Michael Myers and much more character definition. The original shows no reason why Michael has become what he has. I love John Carpenters version as well for the originality, & creepiness factor, but Im very much into gore and violence in horror, so Rob Zombies version does it for me. The rape scene I think also showed more character development...he didn't go after the woman's attackers while they were raping her UNTIL, they started messing around with his masks. To me this shows the pure evil and total disregard of empathy from the character of Michael. Also when he killed off the only guard who was nice to him, more character development of lack of empathy and inherant evil that is Michael Myers.

Nope. It's a your-taste-in-film-is-garbage thing.

It's a taste thing

The original was released before I was born and I can't understand how anyone could put RZ movie above one of the greatest horror movies ever made. Not a RZ hater but nobody had the right to remake/reboot Halloween.

I was 9 when this came out, and I'm 17 now and I absolutley love the orginal. It's my favorite, and I don't mind this film.

I was 18 when the remake was released. I didn't like this film at first but it grew on me. Love the original to bits and saw it when I was a kid. To me this is one of the remakes from the 2000's that is worth a damn along with Texas Chainsaw remake and Dawn of the Dead remake. You have the superior original and this trashy beast as a companion peace. I do think this movie is extremely vulgar and the rape scene is just awful. However I love Devil's Rejects and all that vulgar stuff fits that movie perfectly. It just does not fit this film as well.

This film is really trashy and it kind of helps and hurts the film at the same time. Some times it gives the film a really gritty authentic feel to it. Other times it just is really over the top and doesn't work for a Halloween film. The first and second half of this film feel completely different as well. The first part feels like a trashy Rob Zombie movie and the second feels like a Halloween film.

The original is definitely a classic that I still enjoy. However I enjoy parts of this film as well. Oh and I hated the F13th remake because it seemed like a straight up porno film with extremely annoying characters.

You've got that right; it must be a generation thing. i'm sorry you find the original "corny and boring," because its a beautiful horror film. Personally I can't imagine ANYONE over 20 liking this sleazy, trashy remake. Sorry but I found it to be the most immature, silly movie I ever saw. and talk about "corny.." I found it corny that they turned Michael Myers into a whiny, white trash, TALKING brat that looked like Honey Boo Boo. i also found it incredibly juvenile that Rob Zombie felt the need to have every girl completely naked when they were being murdered. On second thought, i don't think it is a 'generation" thing, but more like an "age thing." i believe when you get older you will change your opinion, and reconsider which is the better movie. When I was 17 I loved hamburgers, even more than steak. But when I became an adult I learned to appreciate quality, and now I would never choose a hamburger over a good steak. Well the original "Halloween" is like a steak," and the remake..well that's kind of like a "p!g *beep* sandwich..." someday you will see what I'm talking about..or maybe you already do, seeing this post is a few years old..

It is definitely up there, as one of the best. Personally I think the original "Black Christmas" is really just as great. Right now I'm searching for the "Halloween" extended version; those added scene make the film even better.

I am the last of generation X and I approve of this movie. I actually prefer this to the original. I though Zombie did a great job of visual work and making it darker. As bad as remakes are, the cinematography is a lot better than most old original.

Don't get hurt kid. I'm not your daddy, I'll beat you senseless.

I'm 25 and the original is one of my favorite movies of all time and I think this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

That's right. It's a personal taste thing. Either you have it, or you don't.

I just can't honestly believe anyone thinks giving Michael Myers a pathetic white trash broken home bullied kid crybaby backstory improves the story of the film. It just wrecks what makes him terrifying in the original.

In the original, he's just a normal kid in a normal family who one day starts brutally murdering everyone. In the remake, Rob Zombie cried about his personal issues as a kid, and lived a vicarious murder fantasy through Michael Myers. I'm more terrified of a villain with no motivation than some bullied little brat.

I agree the white trash thing was not the way to go, but in order to not just make a carbon copy like Psycho and Omen, which is lazy, you have to add depth and differences. TCM did it, Amityville did it. Even Nightmare did it, poorly. But you have to have a twist. An edge to make it your own. To expound on it. Otherwise it's a waste of even doing it.

I agree. I refuse to even acknowledge that this was a Halloween remake because Zombie completely missed the point of Michael Myers. Sure, a remake should stand out from the original, but it shouldn't change the fundamental themes of the story. Zombie did when he stripped Michael of all the mystery and supernatural elements that originally defined him.

Michael isn't a man. He's a force of nature, or the embodiment of evil. Anton Chigurh has more in common with the original Michael Myers than Zombie's Michael Myers does.

A lot of people with no taste on this thread, I'm afraid.

Anyone who thinks that RZ's version of Halloween is better than JC's simply does not understand filmmaking, specifically the concept of dramatic irony. Yes, Halloween IS boring in its first hour; that's the point. It's a typical boring school day for Laurie Strode and her friends, who look forward to getting high and having sex on Halloween night. And yet, A KILLER IS STALKING THEM IN THE BACKGROUND. It's the whole point of the first hour, and it's incredibly creepy. Michael is always there, waiting. Oh, and the movie still works on the big screen; I watched it with an audience and it's a powerful viewing experience, and even the people who were there to mock it as an " old film" were silenced by its power.

Contrast that with Zombie's version, which doesn't really make sense from a character standpoint. Michael is reduced to a serial killer, who has no motivation to kill, except when needed by the film. It's the film equivalent of " he's crazy, oh no wait, he's not crazy. Oh wait it's the second half of the film, he's crazy now. And oh yeah, white trash". Everyone in the film is a raging a-holes, who you want to die immediately, even the kids. You wonder if RZ sees everyone as people he wants kill in his films, or maybe he sees himself like he tries and fails to make us see Michael Myers in his film...as a misunderstood monster.

Don't agree really, I am in my late 30's grew up watching horror movies in the 80s and 90s and love the old Halloween movies, I was also expecting to hate Rob Zombies movies. I ended up loving the 1st one he did, thought the atmosphere and back story stuff was great. The second one I thought was a little bit of a letdown but still some enjoyable parts. I can see the hate on the second one but not the 1st one, it is probably my favorite RZ movie after Devils Rejects (another RB movie that i thought I would hate but ended up loving).

I am an old school horror fan who mainly just watches old horror flicks and foreign horror flicks these days mostly, Halloween 1 from RZ was one of the few modern horror flicks I enjoyed. Love JC but I can't agree with him about RB's first Halloween movie.

I think some older horror fans like myself ended up liking this 1st one. Of course many didn't like it to, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it is a generational thing. I thought it would be sort of a generation thing as sometimes in the past it def seems like that, not with this movie though I really liked it.
