Why cant foreigners make Films in English ?

After recently seeing this movie I would like to say that it had some good scenes and the actor who played hitler was great but what offended me to no ends is what was the language(I know it was germany related)but why not in the american language-English?

This fact bothered me so much that I gave it a 2/10,as I said...the only redemption was hitler.
The action scenes were poor or hardly present(compare it to saving private ryan's action!!!)
Dont you think that making it in english would have benefited the producers and the film itself what with a wider release and better Box office?
I do not think there are any americans on this board because no one must have heard of it(european film for europeans) but making this in english would have proved beneficial to the film

I did not mean the Box office intake...wouldn't an english release helped get better recognition?
Wouldn't an English release get the actor who played Hitler a sure shot oscar nomination?

Only lazy ass americans complain about subtitles..

it was an amazing movie in the language that the story happened... I would say its easily one of the best, if not the best ww2 related movie i've ever seen.. if it was english speaking, well firstly it would be european(hollywood can't make movies like this anymore) and secondly.. it would be Valkrie with tom cruise..

I also initially thought troll.. but I think hes coming from his belief that it would of reached a wider audience if it was hollywoodized.. which i'm sure it would of.. but it would not of been as worthy a film..

People who can't be bothered to learn even a few words in foreign languages before travelling to those countries are all over the world.

great post, there are idiots everywhere

Ignorance isn't culturally specific:

"Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease" George Bush (it is of course a continent).

"My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize." Hank Johnson - clearly needs a basic lesson in geography/geology - given that he thinks islands float (!!!)

"We have a lot of work to do and I'm afraid that it's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border." check an atlas Mr John McCain!

"I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix." Dan Quayle supposedly grew up in Phoenix and still has no idea where it is!

"Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go." Barack Obama - bad at Geography.....or maths?

"The people of Peru, I think, deserve better." Dick Cheney. A noble sentiment you might say - except he was addressing Hugo Chavez at the time, with the intention of criticising his treatment of the people of Venezuela.

You want more? When polled by the National Geographic Society back in 2006, 62 percent of U.S. surveyed were unable to locate Iraq on a map, 75 percent were unable to locate Israel, and 47 percent could not find the Indian subcontinent. Nearly half of the Americans polled didn't know where Mississippi was!

Why cant foreignerns make films in English? You have to realize the world does not revolve around American film, and the English language. Film makers around the world can do whatever they want. As an American, I give this film a 10/10, where as i give that sh*ty American made Nazi film with Tom "Douchebag" Cruise in it a 1/10.

A nazi speaking german is the most evil thing ever created by man. The language is very harsh sounding & doesn't flow like french or italian.

reply

you know, i was going to reply to you and ask if you've ever heard german spoken properly, but then i decided against it and just assume that you're talking out of your arse.

reply

And anyone speaking american reminds me of George Bush, in other words, a douchebag, and french sounds af if you love to be fisted in the ass, but...
what has it got to do with the topic?

it's a german movie
it adds to the feeling if they speak german. I could never watch a movie where hitler spoke english because it wouldnt seem real
yes, maybe it would have benefited the box office and the producers making it in english so that people who are too lazy to read subtitles would actually go an see it
but the movie is german, it's good and it's realistic, if only because of the language
people that really want to see this movie will watch it in german with subtitles and they will like it despite that

reply

Why Americasn can't make films in Dutch, German or Spanish? Just to say some languages.
Maybe because it is not their native language?

Also guess what, for the maker of this movie you are a foreigner.

reply

I'd actually prefer it if Americans made movies about Nazi Germany in German. Make Tom Cruise learn fluent German before he can play a German officer, dammit. Or look at The Bunker, with Anthony Hopkins. A decent enough TV movie, but I kept thinking "Y'know, I always thought the Nazis were German...apparently, I was wrong. Turns out they were all British!"

The OP has to be joking. Just has to be. I mean, complaining that someone playing Hitler speaks German in the movie? haha

reply

James you have a good grasp of the english language considering you are a german
People simply took my appeal in a wrong way. What I meant to say was had this film been made in english,it would have been seen by more people thus higher box office intake and please dont give me those garbage remarks about BO being nothing important.
More people would have appreciated the actor who played hitler and the profits would have been huge....I mean how many theaters did this movie even get released in?
Oh and btw wouldnt better recognition guarantee an oscar nom?
I dont want to say this but I am sick of you foreigners disparaging the United states.
Every where I go I see...americans are rude, ignorant, fat slobs who do not care about the world
well guess what....

Anyone who would rather hear Hitler rant in English instead of his native German would probably have very little interest in this type of film in the first place.

I believe there is a new dumberer and dumbererer movie this summer, and it's in English. Sounds right up your alley transformer boy, go get in line right now!

There are 300 million people in America. There are more than a billion people in China and about that many in India. There are also a lot more Russians than Americans So if American films really want the largest box office possible our films should be either in Chinese, Hindi or Russian and not English, by your logic.

The world does not revolve around us, even though many Americans seem to think so.

Actually, I'm American...but I like to think that I do have a pretty good handle on English.

So take your "blah blah blah" about foreigners elsewhere, okay? Oh, and the Russians toppled Nazi Germany...and the Hussein thing is so laughable, I won't even touch it. haha

Getting to the crux of the actual ISSUE, no, I don't think that Ganz's performance as Hitler would've gotten better recognition had he played it in English, because...HE'S PLAYING HITLER. What's amazing about the performance is how unbelievably similar it is to the real Hitler. Which it really wouldn't be nearly so much if he were speaking ENGLISH, now would it? No...because Hitler spoke GERMAN. Just like in the movie. Get it yet? Making him speak English would rob his brilliant performance of much of its authenticity, and therefore, it wouldn't be nearly AS brilliant.

And where the hell have you been? This movie WAS nominated for an Oscar.

And I have to ask, why the hell should German filmmaker be forced to make films in English? This is like saying that American filmmakers should make their movies in Chinese. Guess what? All over the world, people watch SUBTITLED American movies. Why is it that the Europeans and Asians don't have a problem with watching an English-language film in English, but so many Americans turn up their noses at anything that isn't in English? As an American, myself, I find that absolutely ludicrous...not to mention arrogant. The English language is a comparatively young one. Not everyone in the world speaks it, nor should they have to. Deal with it and move on.

This film is marvelous...and being one of the few GERMAN-LANGUAGE films about Nazi Germany makes it all the better. While I was watching it, I felt like I was getting a glimpse into Hitler's bunker, as it really was. Wouldn't have felt that way had everyone been speaking English. Bruno Ganz was amazing, as was the supporting cast, and considering the subject matter, the fact that they were speaking German was a pro, not a con. And even if this film wasn't about well-known German historical figures, the very idea that foreign filmmakers should have to make their films in English is idiotic and jingoistic, to say the least.

reply

"Every where I go I see...americans are rude, ignorant, fat slobs who do not care about the world."

Wonder why that is? Have you read your own posts? It's funny tho, cause everywhere I go, I see the same hoes...hmmm.

Sadly you are right about the sales being higher if the film were in English. But I'm not sure that's something to celebrate. It's a sign of the ignorance of the American audience as a whole (and to a larger extent, the audience of the Anglophone world...) It just shows that people put convenience over historical accuracy or the integrity of the art, and that people don't want to think while being entertained (which is ok sometimes, but it shouldn't be the exclusive trait of moviegoers...)

And...

"If it weren't for our brave soldiers, the world would be a nazi haven today
If it weren't for our soldiers Saddam hussien would have started a third world war
so show some respect to those brave souls."

Hahahaha. Yeah, Saddam was so dangerous with his "WMDs" and America stopped the Nazis all alone. Let's ask the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis who have died since the war began if America has made their lives better...oh wait.

reply

Don't worry too much about people bashing the US. They might scream louder at the moment, thus pretending to be the majority. But rest assured, that there is a quiet majority of people who indeed look up to what the USA stands for and what they owe them. They might not all speak up just yet. But we (Europeans) slowly start to realize, that it is time to emancipate ourselves from the lies and propaganda, that we are fed day after day, denouncing western culture and western values. And this is for certain: no country represents these values as much as the US does.

So take heart and be proud.

reply

Wow, you completely missed the point of this movie. And you sir, are a moron.

What exactly does the USA stand for other than a childish sham culture?

Oh come ooooon. Not the "support the american soldiers-rant" again.

First of all, it's got nothing to do with the toppic.

Second, as far as I know, during the war of liberation against the english, USA received some help from the french. Where is your everlasting gratuity towards them? You never fail to remind them, that they should kiss your feet for WW2.

Third: in english, this movie had probably never been as great as it is. Just look at Das Boot. Amazing movie in german, but saw it once on TV with american/english dubbing, and it ruined everything.

Fourth: We don't think americans to be rude, ignorant, fat slobs EXCEPT if they make bulls**t statements like yours.

So stop assuming that you are the center/leaders/rulers of the world and the rest of the world will buy you beer at the nearest bar, and love you for being the nice people you are 99% of the time.

1) It's a german film. So it's in german. Is that really so hard to grasp?

2) Erm... The Soviets killed 80% of all german soldiers killed in WWII and Britain had easily as big a part as the americans did. Stop insulting the lives of the brave British and Russian soldiers you sick little man.

Hussein starting a third world war. Wow. You really are an indoctrinated xenophobe aren't you?

Ok, I wont even answer the statements about the US soldiers, because this isnt a political board.

If more movies were made in the languages they should have been, German people talking in German, Italians talking Italian, Spanish speaking Spanish, Swedes speaking Swedish and so on, maybe the US audience wouldnt shun this movie in the first place.
For a bad trend to break, someone has to take the first steps, and it has been taken multiple times, but it always slides back unfortunately because the audience is too used to seeing movies where they only speak english instead of the language they should have spoken from the start.

In sweden (Scandinavia even) we do not dub anything, we only sub it (except for childrens cartoon and such which is dubbed). This means that we are so much more used to hearing different languages in our movies, and have no problem at all watching it. Personally I believe that is the model that should be used all over the world. If not, you'll get too used to one single language and get disturbed so mucht hat the movie gets ruined because of the language.

Some might find me morally challenged or morally ambigious. I prefer morally creative.

Germans don't make films about Hitler for Box Office Revenue. What's wrong with the german language anyway? Maybe "Der Untergang" is not suitable for you yet. Wait a few more years and watch it again. You will have a different sensibility towards the atmosphere, that the german language creates in the movie.
