Relationship between Terri and her Brother

shareThere is NOTHING wrong with being close to a sister or brother, but I have to admitt that I thought the way they looked at each other was a little weird. I think the actors might have had a thing for each other in real life, so it showed on screen (their chemistry). I started watching this movie about 15 minutes after it started so I didn't know they were brother and sister. I started watching when he is sending the dvd, and he was looking at her like as a love interest, so naturally, I thought they liked each other...until I found out that they were brother and sister. I was a little weirded out when I found out.
shareAs to the brother and sister being "too close", some siblings are more than siblings, they are best friends. So get over it. He was protective over her, it was sweet. I don't have a brother, but I have an older sister and she's very protective over me and my younger sister, so it's kind of cool to see siblings on tv that aren't fighting throughout the whole movie.
shareThe way he kept filming her was creepy!
shareHoly crap, when he was filming her in the bathroom, she had left the door open, so it wasn't as if he was filming her doing anything PRIVATE. She was BRUSHING HER HAIR. She knew every time he was filming her, she just didn't know he made the DVD. She didn't kiss Jay right away (though in two minutes she changed her mind) because she was still upset she had lost her best friend and brother and felt guilty being happy.
And what's wrong with someone who likes filming and liked to film the people he found interesting, which included Terri.
You thought they liked each other as bf/gf?! Give me a break!
I got a weird vibe from the way the brother edited the footage of his sister. He wasn't just smiling and looking happy. He was in 'biting your lip to contain erotic pleasure' mode. That's what was weird.
Duff just mugged for the camera. That's the kind of actress she is.
But in trying to set up an amazing brother to sacrifice for the plot, Jason Ritter and Sean McNamara (the director) made some odd choices. In the end, it was very clumsily done. If this movie had been rated R (that would be funny...), this obsessive brother might make sense. In this PG movie, it's just a sure sign that something will go wrong. Too predictable.
You make something that sweet early on in the movie... you're gonna get the sour back in spades.
I'm not saying anyone was trying to put some subtle incest angle in the plot. I'm just saying it was poorly conceived and executed because this is what many people noticed instead of becoming attached to the character. It's bad directing when you don't get your point across clearly without distracting your audience into thinking about other things.
"And that little one, is how papa gained freedom. Now, bonne nuit. Bonne nuit to you all."
OH MY GOD THEY ARE JUST SIBLINGS if u haven't got a brother then shut up.
I have a brother and he isn't very nice but sometimes he's nice...rarely.
But i've seen so many brothers like paul.I mean my cousin's brother(my cousin too)treats her just like paul and he's got a girlfriend for God's sake.it's just normal but not all brothers are like that,it's about the personality that's all
I do have a brother. So I guess I don't have to shut up.
"And that little one, is how papa gained freedom. Now, bonne nuit. Bonne nuit to you all."
"CLOSENESS" is not the issue here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with siblings being close. The issue was not how they were so close, but rather that there was something very creepy about how they acted towards each other. It would be the same thing if it was her and her father. There are a lot of movies with very close father-daughter relationships, and there's nothing wrong with that, but if any father-daughter relationship was portrayed in at all the same way as this brother-sister relationship, then it would be just as creepy. A close and loving relationship with a family member can be portrayed without it coming off seeming so incestuous.

Exactly.
"And that little one, is how papa gained freedom. Now, bonne nuit. Bonne nuit to you all."
Precisely. You took the words right from my keyboard. :)
Personally, I would not be pleased it I found out that my brother was secretly videotaping me, no matter what the reason. God knows what else he's been up to, right?
paul had to be close to his sister. he had to show her that there was more to life than doing exactly what her dad said. he video taped her so she had a chance to go to that music shcool place. and if they were so unrealisticly close than why would he deside to go to phoenix like the next day without her. also i have an 8 year old brother, he is 5 years younger than me and we are really close. yeah we fight but we go to the movies or just talk and hang out. if your not close to your brothers or sisters than i feel bad for you cause how you treat them now effects your relationship with them for the rest of your life.

Do you bite your lip with pleasure when you watch footage you shot of your brothers and sisters like some pervert?
As several people have already said, the fact that they are close is not people are getting creeped out about.
It's the way that closeness was portrayed by the actor and the director. It was clumsily handled and made the brother come across like a incestuous voyeur that got off on videotaping his younger sister.
"And that little one, is how papa gained freedom. Now, bonne nuit. Bonne nuit to you all."
I think its realistic they probabally couldve shown at least one scene with them fighting but hey my brother and i sneak out together and we've gone to clubs and gotten drunk and *beep* and we went to a nickelback concert together i love my brother yeah we fiht but everyone does.... id act the same way if my bro died....
shareno; paul was recording terri to send it in for her, so she could get accepted. nothing perverted. and you all probably only see them this way because:
a) youre all sick minded and need councelling
b) maybe it was the actor who played paul's fault because he had a crush on hilary duff
Yes yes yes. We all know what her brother was doing for her plotwise.
We are not sick-minded (I'm not anyway...) and we only see this stuff because something felt off when we watched Raise Your Voice and saw the brother biting his lip while filming his sister doing mundane things.
And I already said it was the fault of the actor and the director for not making the scene come off as it should have.
"And that little one, is how papa gained freedom. Now, bonne nuit. Bonne nuit to you all."
I thought their relationship was a bit creepy. This has nothing to do with older brothers wanting what is best for their little sisters or her not being able to get over him dying, like other people on this board seem to be leaning towards. Those two things are perfectly normal and weren't portrayed as such in the movie.
However, I thought the way that Paul looked at Teri was very creepy and obsessive. He had a look in his eyes that boys have for girls that aren't their sisters. That very first scene when they are leaving school and he is filming her, I thought he was supposed to be her boyfriend until she commented to her friend not to flirt with her brother.
my brother is very similar to paul. it's a little annoying sometimes but I love him. I agree with dragoncane tho, it was a little creepy!
Yonder no sorghum stenches shut ladle gulls stopper torque wet strainers
hmm i thought that abit :]
cos the first thing you see is him zooming on her and sruff.
and it seems like hes a lovestruck teenager.
then shes like
STOP HITTING ON MY BROTHER XD
and your likee.
woah. hold up..
brother?
but then as you watch more it shows why he does it.
cos he obvuously wants to be a director or somehting.
and shes an inspiration to him :]
so its just close brother and sisterrness xD
yes they're too close! he zooms in her far too much! it's strange! trust me, i have a brother, and that's not a healthy brother-sister relationship..
He's a caring older brother...end of story.?
I'm like that with my sisters too...and even though it's a different situation...since we're all straight, the point is it's not only normal and healthy, I think it's great when older brothers and their sisters are close like that. Now if they were making out, that would be another story...
Swear to shake it up if you swear to listen...
"I gotta go change my...my feet."
well their the only siblings eachother have.
in a small town.
so what if their bestfriends too.
i also have a brother.
we dont act like that.
but also.
its a *beep* film :)
shut. up. are you ready for this?

yah the relationship is too close. when i first saw a clip i thought they were bf and gf. then i read the plot and i was like....REAALLY?
shareWell the whole "even though I have now graduated I still have no life other than filming my sister's daily activities" thing was creepy.
sharethat is the first thing I thought during the filming thing. I have an over protective older brother, but he's nothing like that. The filming thing was just plain weird. Even thinking about my brother looking at me or filming me the way Terry's brother did creeps me out. It was gross.
sharewell, really, does it even say which grade terri is in? sorry if it does and i am mistaken. but they could have only been one grade apart, and i have known a lot of siblings (brother/sister) including myself who have their year older or year younger sibling as their best friend.
shareOne of my best friends is incredibly close with his sister, they've even lived together. Watching them together wasn't much different from watching Terri and Paul together, bar the bad acting etc.
The film doesn't show anyone enough for people to say things like him filming her was creepy...he's about to leave home and he's not exactly planning to come back any time soon after all. Do we even know what he was going to be doing at university? Given the artisic nature of the family in general, who knows, he could have been going off to do something in film and media!! And as for filming her in the bathroom, Christ, its not like she was dancing naked in a shower or something, she was only brushing her hair in front of a mirror. Some people leave school and home and have friends and family sign leaving books, others use film! Not that odd. There is no timeline given to the filming, all we see is him editing and burning it. Is it really that odd to film your "talented" sister singing in the lounge? Is it really that odd to film her singing in the school Choir? Is it really that odd to film her messing around being stupid in front of a mirror? Christ, the latter would be considered prime fodder for a future embarrasing at a birthday party in years to come in most families! Who hasn't wished they could bring out something as potentially embarrasing as a sibling dancing in front of a mirror, singing into a hairbrush along with the radio or whatever??! It's not like she was even in her pants for Gods sake!
If you ask me, it takes a certain sort of person to think that an innocent film portraying a close relationship between two siblings could ever include such a hidden meaning. It's a teen flick, aimed towards YOUNG teens as well. There is no seedy undertone to it, its just a film. It was originally written from a Christian point of view, do you honestly believe the writer/s sat around and thought "Hmmmm, yeah lets make a film about a young girl who's devastated by the loss of her brother but battles against her fear and guilt to prove herself to her peers and family through music...oh and lets hint that her and her brother were having sex" ???
Would anyone say the same if it was two sisters?
Maybe those who think it should be looking at themselves before they look at others, after all the portrayal of Terri and Paul's relationship can only be made sexual by the deviants who have it in their minds!
Honestly, I can see how someone would assume something like this when seeing Terri and Paul's relationship. I will admit that they seem a little too close for a brother and sister to be in my opinion and yeah, the way the actor portrayed it, it did seem like Paul was a bit obsessed with Terri in a weird way and they seemed more like boyfriend/girlfriend then brother and sister. But think of it this way, at least they never shared a weird awkward kiss in the movie like Angelina Jolie and her brother James Haven did that one year at the Oscars. Now that was a really weird thing for a brother and sister to do.

And here's a list of critics who feel the exact same way I do (in addition to those on here who agree with me):

This sucks worse than I Heart Huckabees ----Stewie Griffin
Wow I started this thread more than 2 years ago and it's still going strong. I didn't realise until today. Keep on with the discussion guys!
shareI just saw the movie and I wanted to see if anyone had the same thoughts I did. I was glad to see others did. So I'm not alone in my opinion.
