Memories of Murder vs Zodiac

Which one do you think is better? Two are quite similar and based on true story.

reply

Which zodiac? there are two zodiac movies. the one in 2003 is not very known while the 2007 one is more known. id say this is better than either, though i like all 3.

reply

The OP should have made it Seven vs. Memories of Murder. Then it would be a worthy competition.

reply

Seven is so far outclassed by Zodiac that it isn't even worth comparing.

Memories and Zodiac are very, very close for me. Not one second of Zodiac was less than enthralling. A staggering effort given the obscene amount of information required to digest. Probably Fincher's best film along side The Social Network.

Memories of Murder deals with similar themes, also based on a true story and arguably has the emotional edge over Zodiac.

I love both and it really is impossible to separate them. Some of the best psycho-thrillers of the last decade. I can literally put either of them on at any moment without feeling a sense of tedium for having seen them so many times prior. The true mark of a great murder-mystery and character study.

Zodiac felt a like 2 hours for me and I liked all the 60s setting etc
but memories of a murder just sucked me in and I didnt feel the time at all.
Its just perfect and has no lengths in it.

reply

I thought both were really good movies i think personally that The Zodiac is a very underrated movie but thats just me. I guess i must be into murder mystery films.

looks like were shy one horse.

No you brought two too many.

reply

I personally prefer Zodiac, though I like them both. It's worth mentioning that Bong Joon-ho is a massive fan of Zodiac, he went as far as calling it a 'masterpiece'and named it as one of the top ten films ever made in the recent Sight and Sound poll.

reply

"Zodiac" easily. "Memories of Murder" just dragged for me.

reply

I thought Memories of Murder was more powerful. Zodiac is my least favorite Fincher movie.

Memories of murder hands down.
"Stalingrad. . . The fall of Stalingrad was the end of Europe. There's been a cataclysm."

Memories of Murder

"Let us be crooked, but never common."

Memories of Murder-9
Zodiac-8

Both are fantastic movies but even though I saw Zodiac first, MoM is definitely the superior movie. Btw, I am not sure if MoM influenced Fincher when he was making Zodiac (though it certainly seems that way) one movie he did closely try to emulate was All the President's Men which is a similar movie to both MoM and Zodiac but not about unsolved crimes or murder. I found All the Presidents Men better than Zodiac, however I am not sure if it beats Memories of Murder that easily. Its a tie for me between them.
What do you guys think?

reply

Another movie that is quite similar to both Zodiac and MoM is The Pledge with Jack Nicholson. I highly recommend it.

reply

Yeah I absolutely agree. The Pledge is another good movie very similar to the above mentioned. It has a slower pace compared to the other movies, but Nicholson's brilliant in it and if Sean Penn hadn't made Into the Wild, i'd say its his best directorial effort. Definitely one that should be watched.

I loved Zodiac, enjoyed it from beginning to end and I've seen it twice. Partly what's so great about it imo is how it takes so long for... nothing to happen, yet it's one of the most gripping films I've seen. The evidence strongly hints towards one suspect who I was certainly convinced had to be the killer, but the legal procedures get in the way and make it a very long and incredibly interesting process. But by the end even if we're quite sure it has to be that suspect, I don't think there's a 100% certainty it's him. There is some doubt that remains, and after all these years and all the time spent on the case there's still no resolved answer. Just a great film guided brilliantly by the dark but gratifying tone of Fincher.

That said, having just seen Memories of Murder, I think I enjoyed it even more than Zodiac. The development of the two main detectives is what stood out the most, and specifically Park Doo-Man. He's so convinced he has the eyes of a shaman and can tell you who committed the crime by looking at them. We see him beating a confession out of his suspects, but he gradually questions himself and by the time he looks in the suspected killer's eyes right near the end, he just doesn't know anymore. He's changed his views completely. He finally admits to himself that it could've been anyone who committed the crime, not just some monster-looking creature or a particular standout -- just an "ordinary" human being as the little girl at the end puts it. Beautiful.

Memories of Murder is 10/10
Zodiac is 8/10

Memories of Murder is perfect. Its a Top Ten Movie Of All Time For Me. I think the Unfortunate Time Jumps in Zodiac brought it down. Obviously it was something that had to be done, but It hurt the Film Regardless.
