I have seen only a handful of films from Korea, but so far they are all very well-made. Korea has really put itself on the cinematic map in the last decade. What are some of the best Korean films you have seen to date?
My top 5 1. Oldboy 2. Memories of Murder 3. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring 4. The Host 5. Oasis
Agreee !!!! Korea movie is awesome ok then my top 5 list are: 5. Oldboy (This is the first korean movie that im fall in love with and this movie made me exploring korean movie) 4. A Bittersweet Life 3. J.S.A 2. Memories Of Murder 1. The Host
Reading all of these and can't believe this is the first mention of "Oasis." Mine 1. The Chaser 2. Oasis 3. Secret Sunshine 4. I Saw the Devil 5. Oldboy
1. Memories of Murder- Quite simply one of the finest films ever made, regardless of genre or country of origin. This is an engrossing and utterly haunting crime story that is sharply written, superbly acted, and brilliantly directed. I thought it was even better than David Fincher's Zodiac and Seven.
2. Taegukgi- A powerful war film. It admittedly lacks subtlety, but makes up for it by delivering a compelling story with some of the most moving scenes I've seen. The two leads are fantastic, the battle scenes are epic and intense, and the score is absolutely beautiful.
3. The Man From Nowhere- The best pure Korean action film made to date. Won Bin kicks ass as a former secret agent out in search for his kidnapped friend. The climactic battle, which offers a bloody mix of guns and knives, is one of the best action sequences I have ever seen.
4. Joint Security Area- I am always fascinated by flashback movies that tell their stories through different characters' points-of-view. This is one of the very best in that regard. A very compelling mystery/thriller.
I've only got a concrete top 4. My fifth place spot is open to a lot of films (Shiri, Musa, The Way Home, Oldboy) and I'd have to rewatch those as well as check out some acclaimed films that I have yet to see (A Bittersweet Life, I Saw the Devil).
1. Oldboy 2. Memories of Murder 3. Tae Guk Gi 4. The Chaser 5. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance 6. The Man from Nowhere 7. Mother 8. Joint Security Area 9. A Bittersweet Life 10. The Host
Haven't seen too many Korean movies that weren't modern thrillers. Pretty much just The Good, the Bad, the Weird and Tae Guk Gi (both of which, it could be argued, contain at least some thriller tropes). I really like the wave of thrillers from Korea though (the ones listed above, plus Lady Vengeance, I Saw the Devil, Ri-teon, 3-Iron, etc.). Not sure if I want to branch out into comedy/drama/romance/horror though.
