Saw Departed first?

I saw the departed in theaters, and thought it rocked. Some buddies and I just watched Infernal affairs the other night. I thought it was a cool flick, what struck me the most was how many scenes Scorsese kept near-identical in the adaption. Anyway... did anyone else feel like seeing the Departed first made IA a little less good...

You would know all the plot twists, you know whats going to happen, etc. Also... I think Scorsese definitely spent more time on character and setting (Boston) development). I think I transfered a lot of these pre-conceptions and such to IA, since they really fast forward a lot of that. (IA does about 30 minutes of the Departed in 10 minutes).

Thoughts?

if you had seen Infernal Affairs before watching The Departed. Actually, I feel the deaths of the chief and of Leung's character were better in this movie. They seemed to drag out the fact it was going to happen a little longer in the remake. The original version had the incidents occur so it was more of a 'shock' when it occurred. Like I said, though, I saw the original version, first, so that could be why.

As for the character and setting developments, I didn't need all that, really. I got what I needed from the film to enjoy and relate to all of the characters in the 2002 film. I didn't need the tidy little clean up scene that they added in 'The Departed', either. I don't live in the era of the Hayes Code.

(btw, I am an American)

I believe for most, which film you prefer would depend on which film you saw first and whether you can understand the language in which the film is spoken. I saw Infernal affairs years ago when it first came out. After seeing it again on video, I have to admit it is still as amazing now as it was then. We will see if Departed can similarly stand the test of time.

Directing, cast and acting

i have seen the departed three times, before watching IA, may be thats the reason?

i do not know, but the departed in my opinion is the one

I have seen The Departed three times and Infernal Affairs once.I think that Infernal Affairs was better.

The Infernal Affairs is a masterpiece and makes the audience think about the characters and what they go through while The Departed helps the audience to forget their problems for two and a half hours and nothing more.

there would be no Departed if it werent for IA, but Departed was a better film. IMO.

Many have praised The Departed for it really had character development as compared to the Infernal Affairs. But the Infernal Affairs story is divided into three movies. The Departed adapted the movie not only from the first movie but in all three movies.

I'd say the exact opposite is true for most.

You should always watch the originals first! I did the same mistake as you here. Since we know the plot we'll be biased. I lowered my rating on The Departed.

The Departed is utter trash. Marty took some parts of an amazing film (not the best parts) and made them worse.

Marty, just give up and give young directors who actually have a future some help/tips instead of trying to ride a wave of popularity which you built from your early films YET does not exist anymore.
