steve martin perverted?

Is it me or did steve martin write then direct and star in this movie so he could get some from a girl young enough to be his daughter? That is why I will never watch this movie.

Hes Steve Martin, I doubt he needs stage-kissing to "get some". Lots of girls young enough to be his daughter would be happy to go out with (or stay in with) him. He's incredibly attractive, intelligent, funny, and rich. Why should he have to write a book and star in the movie just to be able to fake getting some from anybody?

No he's not perverted. Steve Martin had actually cast someone else in the role or was planning on it... I think he was looking at casting Tom Hanks for Ray. After a certain point, he decided that since Ray was his creation, he didn't feel that another could do the character the way he wanted it to be done. Also, it was a book before it was a movie. I'm pretty sure Steve Martin didn't sit down and write the book thinking "Hey, if I make this really good I can play Ray in a movie and be all over some hot young girl."

To the original post....

You are missing a very charming and warm hearted movie. I was in the same situation as Mirabelle (sp?) at about the same age as Clair Dain's character. It was one of the most fulfilling relationships I have ever had. This movie reminds me of my time. The man I was with for many years was not perverted in any way. There are so many men and yes, women, who date younger people. Sometimes there is a connection between two people where age is just not a factor.

You should actually watch the movie before you judge it. It sounds, though, that you would not like this movie since you have preconceived ideas anyway. I have found that you either love this movie or hate it. I am one that loves this movie.

Sorry about any spelling errors. Worst speller in the world!!!!

I think that this movie gives you something to think about how the sexes communicate what they want which so often is confused by the opposite sex. The is also compounded by Ray's desire to "screw around" or to even be friends with benifits. During one of their relationship discussions it's obvious that what he was saying wasn't what she heard and I can totally identify with that so often as the younger person you don't know all the ins and outs of relationships and the opposite sexes lingo, so what Ray was saying seemed to say that he wanted to have a an open relationship but Maribelle heard differently and got hurt. This doesn't take into account that he doesn't consider that she might want a serious relationship and thinks that she understands what he is saying when she really doesn't or perhaps that she is swept up in the moment and hears only what she wants to hear.
I know how that feels I was 23 at the time and he was 25 years older and I see some parallels and it allows me to see what may have been his side, that at first all he wanted was a physical relationship. The reality was that he did see how young I was so he keep the relationship more platonic. Over the past decade he has become one of my best friends and I can see passed(and even fancy) the wrinkles and receding hairline to the spirit within. He is not rich by any means. At this point I'm not sure I could get involved with him again without at least fearing the possible destruction the only previously intimate and one of the closest friendships I have. I fear that he would reject me again and I'm not sure I could take it. I have learned a lot but sometimes the experience isn't a pleasant one.
May December relationships are more common than in the past but there is still the stigma of friends and family saying "what are you doing with this old man/kid?". There is also the thinking that the other should be with people their own age.

for those who didn't like the narration let me point something out. at the very beginning of the film mirabelle is described in that opening narration that (i'm paraphrasing now) she wanted someone to say she was special and the find someone that would fit her perfectly. this is the key to why she was attracted to both jeremy and ray.

remember she threw away jeremy's number after a horrible date. he didn't treat her special, had no idea of how to treat any woman.

ray, although much older, made her feel special. he went to the trouble of finding her address and sending her an expensive, useless gift that simultaneously demonstrated that when he met her at sak's it was not to buy gloves but to meet her. remember, too, the narration later added that the question she most wanted to ask but could not was 'why me?'. perhaps she was afraid of the answer and leaving it unasked and unanswered let her believe that ray really did understand her for the special person she is.

we all want to believe we're special inside and some women need that affirmation more than most. that's why she was drawn to ray...the money helped, of course, but i imagine the story could have been much the same if he were not. ultimately, of course, she realized she was not that special one for him, at least not enough for him to emotionally commit.

personally, i didn't care for the jeremy character and i think in a year or two they'll split. quirky can only carry you so far.

and that's why we have narration in this film, to provide insight into mirabelle's character that we might not understand otherwise.

In my opinion, no steve martin was not perverted. I also read the book, and wasnt Claire supposed to be 28? Thats what it said in the book anyways that I can recall. She is a young woman, not a little girl, and she knew what she was doing getting involved with an older man. People need to look past age, if two people are happy, then who cares? I think claire really started to fall in love with him, she wasnt using him for gifts or money or anything. Did you hear her asking for anything? nope. He bought her gifts, paid her tuition, because he wanted to. Noone was forcing her to sleep with him. It was obvious there was an attraction there, and age should have nothing to do with it. As long as people are two condescending adults, then more power to them! I know lots dont agree and think its creepy, but I dont have any problem with it.

RIP Heath Ledger, you will always be missed.I will never forget you

Hey I wouldn't turn Steve Martin away either.

My husband is 20 yrs. older than me, and we've been together for 32 yrs.
He didn't have money,
But he was sweet and kind and fun.............

I loved this movie.

Well, Steve Martin did date the real-life Mirabelle (name changed in the book and movie) but who are we to judge?

People get together for all sort of reasons. Mirabelle had more going for her than youth (talent, ambition, enthusiasm, intellect, etc), and Ray had more going for him than money (he was witty, urbane, considerate, worldly, attractive, etc).

Yes, perhaps he should have seen that she was taking the situation more seriously than he was, and taken action sooner, but that's a pretty common situation for couples of any age.

Quoting...

As I said in another post, the ONLY reason Steve or Steve's character in Shopgirl got a cute chick into bed was the dough. Take away the money and you rename the movie "Uh, I Don't Think So You Creep."

That's SO true.

This movie is disgusting, if you want to see a movie about "adults" who don't know how to run their lives watch this movies. i won't say it's a bad movie because truthfully its not and deserves it's rating. I just found it to lack any class at all and too synonymous with the depravity in modern western culture today.
