steve martin perverted?
Is it me or did steve martin write then direct and star in this movie so he could get some from a girl young enough to be his daughter? That is why I will never watch this movie.

shareNo, he is playing a character in a movie. You are right if this feels like abuse to you, to skip it. Abuse, and mean people, suck, big time.
This is a *movie* talking about what adults do.
In real life, older and younger adults do become romantically involved; for a lot of different reasons. The commentary helps clarify these problems that the characters are dealing with. I see this as: adults making mistakes; people get hurt; and then they grow. It does have a happy ending.
I lived and worked in Los Angeles at this girl's age. When you work somewhere upscale like Saks, men try to treat you like you are just another product for sale. Isn't it revealing that the first contact with the older man, was over a purchase he ended up giving her? The whole transaction was a ruse. My mouth dropped open when I saw that scene, because it had the same tone as what happened to me. I had a powerful man his age ask me for directions to a restaurant he really wasn't going to, and then received 2 dozen long-stemmed red roses and instructions to meet him there for a dinner. Very masterful, very powerful, and very calculating. I managed to feel insulted, like I was being bought and sold. He and I never had that dinner. This wasn't an isolated event. In Los Angeles, you have Rays and Jeremys. The temptation is overwhelming to fall into that luxury and just float a little while. She never acted like a gold digger, and that was charming to see.
I am a little proud to say, I blew off the Rays and dated the Jeremys. Of course, now that I am older and have trouble paying the bills...well, I can appreciate what a little time spent with a Ray could offer over the Jeremy I married. Just kidding, sweetheart!
LA Story was a delight because Steve Martin hit all the right notes for that area of the planet. I consider this movie to be a much more serious bookend to life in the City of Angels.
A family friend once told us she dated a man her father's age when she was barely out of her teens. Not a healthy idea, but the fact is they remained friends down the years. She told us this story when she was in her early 30s. I suspect the answer is, many women marry a guy they love on the first go-around, with no though to his financial means, and they marry a guy who can take care of them on the second try, when they are bit older and notions of youthful romance have evaporated into real-life concerns. It is not uncommon for the one they marry to take care of them to be older, and one way or the other romance may have little or nothing to do with it. Of course, many married women of a certain age will profess to swoon over young-ish hunks like Tom Cruise or Leo DeCaprio. It doesn't hurt, of course, that guys like this not only have sex appeal but loads of money.
shareJaenne,
lol
Nicely written...what did the hubby say? :)
Yes, I'm sure he spent all that time and effort (especially since he WROTE THE BOOK FIRST) to ACT in a movie with a woman younger than himself (note the word ACTING, he did not actually "get some" from her). That's so very logical of you.
Your riposte was spot on. Tom Hanks was the front runner initially. Then the director realized Steve Martin already knew the character inside and out. Hence...
shareYES!!!! it was strange to watch Claire falling in love with someone who could be her FATHER!
shareMy friend Olga was in a relashionship with a man 32 years her senior. He was older than her own father. He also was the most meaningful relatioship of her life (her words.)
It's Steve Martin for chrissakes! I'm pretty shure the man could (if he were so inclined) get a lot of twenty something booty.
Franbelda,
I am also in a relationship with someone 30+ years my senior and it is also the most meaningful relationship in my life as well.
I wouldn't say no to Steve Martin either! LOL! (Yeah, I'm nuts, I know...)
I think your suppose to look past the age gap, I didn't think of him as pervert, I actually enjoyed this film and enjoyed watching people grow. I don't think there is anything wrong with older guy, younger girl relationships.
I enjoyed watching Steve Martin playing a serious character for a change.
The age gap (along with Ray's emotional problems and distance) were issues in the movie, so I'd question the relevance of this thread...
shareMy sister is married to someone 30 years her senior. I think relationships can happen to any age and it's not peverted. I thought this film was a beautiful analysis of relationships, it had very little to do with the age, rather the relationships formed between people. There was a difference in the two people, it probably wouldn't have mattered much if Steve Martin's character was thirty years younger if he still had the same one sided relationship.
shareOh good gracious people, grow up. The movie is about two adults (well three if you count Jeremy) having an adult relationship. It isn't abuse if an adult woman who has gone to college and is on her own falls in love and has a sexual relationship with an older man. Or if the situation could be, a younger man having a sexual relationship with an older woman. The point is, they are all adults, not children, not teenagers. That, my friends, would be abuse.
Who's to say who we will fall in love with? And the point of the story was a young woman exploring life and relationships; and the heartache that comes with loving someone who is incapable of loving another. Steve Martin's book was written exactly like that, Ray Porter was always an older man with lots of money living an empty, selfish life. He was always up front with Mirabelle that he wasn't interested in establishing a lasting relationship. She misunderstands him though and thinks his gift-giving means he loves her. She gets hurt when she finally wakes up and realizes he doesn't really love her and can't commit to her. In the end, I think that he realizes how much he hurt her and perhaps he learned a lesson about trying to buy people. And she learns to live her life on her own terms and becomes a bit wiser in the end when it comes to falling in love.
LMAO,,,,,,, that's how I felt about this movie,,,I just see Martin in a entirely different light now. I feel like its almost damaged him career wise. This movie was just not him,,,I mean,,,,sugar daddy,,young girl,,,is not appealing to people,,,and when I saw the two of them in intimate situations,,,it just really turned me off,,and Martin use to be one of my favorites however after watching him in this,,,I don't think I want to see him again for a while. Maybe its time he retires so he can go find a young girl to be a sugar daddy too,,I know there are plenty that would play the role in real life with him,,,fake,,,phony,,,,this hurts,,,I thought Martin had more depth to him then that,,,and by the way,,,what was she doing with the camera thing? She would take pics and do something with it. What was that about?
shareblah -
shareare you serious? Steve Martin is an actor. he was acting. that's his job.
shareIt's too bad that you're keeping yourself from seeing it, because Steve Martin has a real gift at being able to bring out the humanity of relationships. This movie isn't perfect by any means, but it's about emotion, not perversion. If it makes you feel better, Steve initially wanted someone younger to play the part.

Movies take millions of dollars to make and years to get off the ground. There are cheaper ways to meet girls. Claire Danes
was born in 1979 and this movie was released in 2005 when she was 26. I don't think she was a girl.
When Steve Martin made "L A Story" his co-star was Victoria Tennent who was 41. Didn't they get married later?
Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson have had leading ladies half their age for years. Nicholson had one film recently where he has a heart attack trying to date a young woman and ends up with her mother Diane Keaton. In this same film Keaton was dating Keanu Reeves who was her daughter's age.
