Greatest love story is romeo and juliet (which is actually kind of a copy of tristan and isolde which was written 200 years prior).... but if we're talking strictly movies then:

casablanca
the english patient
lost in translation
brokeback mountain
it's a wonderful life

The Notebook is my favourite love story. Some may disagree and that is fine! Every one is entitled! But The Notebook I though was phenomenal! I do agree with an older post Edward and Kim (Edward Scissorhands). But truly I cry EVERYTIME I watch The Notebook, yes I am a very emotional person, but it is truly a relate able love story!

There have been a lot of excellent suggestions in this thread. Based on the comments here, there are several films that I am going to have to watch.

One movie that is a personal favorite of mine that I haven't seen mentioned, is "An Affair to Remember" starring Cary Grant as Nickie Ferrante and Deborah Kerr as Terry McKay. Another very touching love story is "Random Harvest" starring Ronald Colman as Smithie and Greer Garson as Paula. Both are older films (i.e., > 50 years old), but both are well worth a look.

Titanic is a good film and all...but not the best love story ever.
And don't even get me STARTED on the whole Twilight thing. If you think that's love...I pity you...

Thank you so, so much for mentioning Random Harvest! It truly puts all the other sappy stories like The Notebook, Titanic, Romeo + Juliet, etc. to absolute shame! Plus, you can't get better than Ronald Coleman and Greer Garson!

Pride & Prejudice. Two persons who must overcome weaknesses of theirs in order to be able to get each other, and love based not on appearences alone but similar minds and a love that grows: not the *beep* "love at first sight" and after one conversation, we're supposed to believe that they are meant for each other.

1. Gone With the Wind. No doubt.
2. The English Patient-based on the movie, not the book
3. Pride & Prejudice-based on the book not the movie
4. Titanic-I know it's overrated, but ohmygod, the chemistry.
5. Atonement-haven't read the book

And seriously people, Twilight? How can someone call it a classic love story?
Have you ever compared it to real classics. -facepalm-
Twilight would probably make the cringe-worthy love stories of all time. But, that's just my opinion. Compare it to something like Rhett&Scarlett.

There are so many great, wonderful lovestories that mean a lot to me. But the greatest love story (if we talk about movies only!!) to me will clearly always be "Gone with the wind"! It's so tragic and haunting. And Vivien Leigh & Clark Gable were the most perfect for their parts.

Second only to me is "Legends of the fall"!
I also loved the big lovestory in "North & South", "Out of africa" was wonderful, "Titanic" really moved me at that time... Oh and don't forget everyone's guilty pleasure "Dirty Dancing"! :-) Speaking of which: I also like the lovestory of "Twilight" very much - no matter what the haters might say.

I love that someone finally put Kat and Patrick on here...I was wondering where they were.

Although I would have to go with The Taming of the Shrew (even though its really just a bet) that is not only my fav Shakepeare but also my fav love story...its such a classic! :)
