I feel like the lonesome dove series is classic

Open Range is very average fair. The three main characters are fine, but there is absolutely no development of the bad guy or his crew. And that fellow at the end there who admits to shooting the boy and killing the other open ranger, I believe I was seeing him for the first time. This film wouldn't get in my top two hundred westerns. Costner and Duvall go a bit over the top on the solemnising for my liking.

My top five

The Searchers
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Wild Bunch
Shane
High Noon

And some more to show the underlying quality of far better films than Open Range

Fort Apache
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Dances with Wolves
Stagecoach (1939 version)
The Naked Spur
The Fastest Gun Alive
The Sheepman
Destry Rides Again
The Magnificent Seven
For a Few Dollars More
Warlock
The Bravados
The Gunfighter
Cheyenne Autumn
Rio Bravo
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Broken Arrow

How on earth is Open Range in your top 5 Westerns? This was a very forgettable movie - all I remember about it was that I didn't like it.

reply

Open Range would have been better without a six shooter being fanned to shoot 8 times. That is why they called them six shooter! Duh!!!!

1. The Searchers
2. Shane
3. Ox-Bow Incident
4. Unforgiven
5. Red River
