why would the aliens waste their time with this one farmhouse?

kinda weird, makes no sense. also, sending two aliens down without weapons? what were they supposed to do to the humans, just beat them up?

movies are fiction, mkay? they do stuff the writers make up, but they don't give us every detail in the whole goddam universe because a movie would be 45 hours long to explain everything. and NO ONE is going to watch a 45 hour long movie. ever.

you take what they give you and enjoy, or don't.
there's a million fictional reasons for one farmhouse, or no weapon etc. make them up if its important to you.
Otherwise, the movie plays out, for us to watch and enjoy (or not) what is presented.

I take them at face value: "this is how this went down in THIS world (the movie)" and I accept it without questioning a million little details that have no explanation in a two hour movie.

- farmhouse: they were very pissed off and wanted revenge. you know... just like how people get sometimes. who knows?
- only two? No clue were you got that number. they were all over the place. one weapon is built in: their chemical spray. did you even watch this movie???
- the came for the salad. killing humans was just a fun side gig. who knows? who even cares???

reply

there's a difference between suspension of disbelief and enjoying being dumb. suspension of disbelief is wondering why aliens are hurt by something like water. but whatever, they're aliens, i can believe it because they evolved differently. but wasting their time on a farmhouse makes no logical sense.

my simple take was.... that set of aliens was near them, that's all. others were elsewhere doing stuff.
also this story was focused on this one family, not all over the world.

and that final alien was revenge for fingers cut off earlier.... people (or aliens) making poor decisions is a major part of most movies. without the conflict, there'd be nothing interesting to watch

Water does not have a low pH it has a neural pH. Water had an equal concentration of hydrogen and hydroxide ions, when the concentration of hydrogen ions goes up the pH goes down and it becomes acidic. When the concentration of hydroxide ions goes up the pH goes up and it becomes basic .

I have always considered this film as a parable about redemption; I don't take it literally.

reply

yeah, I really enjoyed the "signs" angle

That would just be a TV series lol. πŸ˜›

"what were they supposed to do to the humans, just beat them up?"

There's a universal desire to beat up humans. I mean look at us...

punching bags of the universe :D

They weren't just at the farmhouse though. They were at M Night Shyamalan's house too. And who knows how many other houses as well off camera. And they had that stuff that they spray out. I would consider that a type of weapon. Plus who knows they might have had other hidden kinds of defense mechanisms/weapons on them too. We never got to see what their larger plan was because they got thwarted before they had a chance to reveal everything. Who knows maybe there'll be a sequel someday. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

You should look into the "demon theory" about Signs, if you're not already familiar with it. It's an interesting theory that posits that the aliens are not aliens at all, but are actually demons. According to the theory, M. Night scatters clues throughout the film to tell us this.

Once you've looked into it, rewatch the film with that theory in mind. It makes for an interesting experience.

reply

Interesting. But then why would demons be defeated by water? Baptism?

reply

Holy water.

There are potential clues in the film that Bo is more than meets the eye. I'm going off memory here, but according to what I recall at one point she was said to be "like an angel" when she was born. The dog that Morgan kills also acts as if it's possessed and tries to attack Bo, which could potentially be interpreted as the demonic attacking something that is holy. There are a few other things as well that I'm not recalling, but it all adds up to Bo having spiritual qualities that allow her to bless the water. Remember that the glasses of water that are used at the end to defeat the creature are all glasses that she has drank out of and left around the house.

Furthermore, the news reports say at the end of the film that a "primitive method" discovered in three cities in the Middle East was used to push back the invaders. Obviously the Middle East is the birth place of Christianity and the three cities could represent the three members of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Though I've also seen some people interpret the three cities as the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.) And according to the demon theory, the "primitive method" would be holy water, a tool that has been used to fight against the demonic for ages.

Also keep in mind that M. Night attended a Catholic school growing up, and obviously Christian themes run throughout the entire film.

reply

Fascinating. I've never even considered such a perspective with this film. That the themes about faith could also be combined with literal interpretation.

reply

If you do some digging you'll find some articles, Reddit threads, and YouTube videos on the demon theory. It's pretty interesting and, once the evidence is assessed, it seems totally plausible that M. Night intentionally made a film that could be watched both ways: One way interprets the film straightforwardly as an alien invasion movie with themes of faith woven in, and the other is another film hidden under the surface that's about a spiritual invasion by demonic powers.

As I mentioned earlier, if you read up on the theory and then rewatch the movie with it in mind, going through the film again makes for a very interesting experience.

reply

Maybe the aliens needed crops? Or maybe disrupting our source of food would lead to our downfall and speed along the invasion.
