I know I already commented, but I needed to add something:
For anyone who didn't read my other post, I said Lizzie McGuire (of course). I was just rewatching some of the episodes, and it occurred to me what, above all, makes LM so superior to HM - it had really, really poignant and lovely moments. You would *never* find the relationship similar to the one between Lizzie and Gordo on HM. Never. Remember the moment when they're outside her house and he's about to ask her out? His nervousness is so palpable, so realistic. The way he stutters when he said that she was, "really impressive too, you know, with the...stuff." It's so sweet, and just...real. On HM the guy would just make a fool of himself and fall down or something. Or what about in "Dear Lizzie," when Gordo is about to tell Lizzie how he feels and then he lets her go, and he watches her go, smiling, with "Out of Reach" playing in the background? Again, a beautiful scene (not just for a kid's show, but for any show) that you would NEVER see on HM. And then there's "First Kiss," which was just an amazing episode in itself. Lizzie's obsession with Ronnie was a little over the top, but still realistic enough. And then Gordo's expression when he sees Lizzie kissing Ronnie...it was just heartbreaking. AND he also happened to be holding a "mixed CD," and it was clear he had made it because Ronnie had made Lizzie one. They never mention Gordo making it, but that one moment of him holding it shows that they put a lot of thought into the storyline - thought that you'd never see in HM.
Furthermore, Lizzie is such a more likable protagonist than Miley. Miley is spoiled and even when she "learns her lesson," repeats her mistake and treats her friends like crap. Lizzie was always sweet and just wanted to help others, and that even came through when she was having her typical teenage self-centered moments. Even the few episodes where she WAS awful she fixed her mistakes - for good.
And Lizzie McGuire never had an annoying catch phrase that made me want to tear off my ears.
And seriously, can anyone think of a Disney show that had or could have a better finale than LM's? That yearbook picture with the kiss on the cheek and Gordo's grin, not to mention "I Can't Wait" playing in the background was just...perfect.
In general, there was something about ALL of the relationships between the characters that just really struck home. But it was Gordo and Lizzie's friendship turned to awkward adolescent love that really made it a gem.
"Bye, Harry!" said Hermione, and she [...] kissed him on the cheek.
