movies that are very good but you don't want to see again

this is one of mine. another is children of men. both are so grim, almost painful to watch. maybe also stalingrad, although it isn't as good a film as the other two. watching all 3 in a row would require prozac.

Schindler's List and The Road.

I'd go with:

Requiem for a Dram
House of Sand and Fog
The Deer Hunter
Million Dollar Baby
21 Grams
Leaving Las Vegas

All very very good movies but they are hard to watch and I wouldn't want to have them on DVD..

"Jerry, it's Frank Costanza. Mr. Steinbrenner's here, George is dead, call me back."

reply

Didn't notice anyone mentioning this, but I'd have to go with THREADS. Don't know why, but it depressed me for weeks.

Finally someone mentioned "Threads"; thank you, Darius6. I rarely refuse to watch a good movie again; nevertheless "Threads" left me shaking and wanting to go down on my knees and pray.

Another one where I either couldn't finish the book nor watch the movie all the way was "1984".

Carnal Knowledge
Cries and Whispers
Last Tango in Paris

There are others, but I'm just submitting a short list. Have never been able to watch these three ever again.

However, I have seen The Pianist 4 times on TV. Very moving, very well done in most ways. Sometimes I think the Nazi topic has been done to death, but then something this good comes along. Far superior to Schindler's List or to Inglourious Basterds. My personal opinion.

I tend to rewatch great movies even if they are depressing or dark.. but one that disturbed and depressed the hell out of me was Irreversible. I guess you can call it great because it succeeded in doing what I think it was trying to achieve. Some movies you just watch once, no matter how good they are

Saving Private Ryan

The Road with Viggo Mortensen was harrowing. Everything about the movie depressed me to the core.

Men Behind the Sun

"Go outside. Get Sammy the Snake, Joe Rags, Big Angie."

I'm absolutely stunned that no one mentioned "The Bicycle Thieves". Not only is it one of the greatest movies I've seen. It's also by far one of the most depressing. And I mean right off the bat.

You think Chopin's First Ballade is sad....Listen to this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd4XgD8WLMU

It was one of mine too...watched it the very first time when it came to theaters in 2002; since then, in here it's on TV every 27th of January, yet I never ever had the guts to watch it again.
I'm gonna do it today.

Another one is "Martyrs", as someone else already wrote...and that I will NEVER watch again.

I steer clear of all versions of The Diary of Anne Frank. The subject matter is too depressing.
