This is better than 'Princess Mononoke'? Are you kidding me?!?

No way is this better than "Princess Mononoke" from the same studio.

"もののけ姫, mononoke hime" has a better, way more epic story, better characters and an amazing score.
I read several times that people think that the score of "Spirited Away" is annoying.

For me, "Princess Mononoke" will always be the best Studio Ghibli- and Hayao Miyazaki-film because it's stunning and made for young teenagers and adults, "Spirited Away" is a children's movie.

What do you think?

reply

I don't know. They're so different. Princess Mononoke is an epic man vs nature film. Spirited Away is an intimate coming of age story. I think they're both magnificent but the beauty and elegance with which Spirited Away portrays a child's transition into adulthood is harrowing, if not ground-breaking. For that I say it's better.

I thought I was the only one ranked Mononoke at #1.

I agree that Princess Mononoke is his best work, but there is no reason to dismiss Spirited Away just because it is a children film. It is not like being an adult story makes a film automatically better - it is how a story is told, and what the story has to say what makes a narrative better or worse.

"Citizen Kane" fan, "Frozen" fan, and "Boyhood" fan. ;)

I mean both are masterpieces, it's kind of pointless to compare Miyazaki films, he just makes one great film after another and favorites are subjective.

They are my two favorites though, this wins out because I think it's just visually perfect and the imagination is wonderful, but Mononoke is like a great Kurosawa epic, so it's just as good really.

Action wise Mononoke, but visually, Spirited Away.

I'd say Mononoke has a wider range...

It's not better than Princess Mononoke

It's FAR FAR superior to that awful, boring, ambiguous, ambivalent lame movie.
Screw Mononoke, one of Ghibli's worst.

I'm hesistant to see Princess Mononoke again. Even if it is a well made film. I found the killing of wolves offensive, even within the context of the story I was very frustrated that someone like Lady Eboshi got away with that. A more satisfying ending would have had the wolf head jump up and bite her head off. The movie was good but the image of a wolf being murdered is super disgusting to me and it took me out of the story.

I much prefer Nausicaa for that reason. It visits the exact same themes of nature and balance that Mononoke did, but without the killing of wolves. I can handle arthropods being killed within the context of a story, but wolves? No.

Not really because that would undermine the movie's message that hatred and violence does not help but makes things worse.

So only the cute animals shouldn't be killed, right?

Can't stop the signal.

sorry you're SO WRONG. It was okay but Spirited Away is something else, incomparable! Everybody has different opinions, no need to rant on it though
