This is better than 'Princess Mononoke'? Are you kidding me?!?

No way is this better than "Princess Mononoke" from the same studio.

"もののけ姫, mononoke hime" has a better, way more epic story, better characters and an amazing score.
I read several times that people think that the score of "Spirited Away" is annoying.

For me, "Princess Mononoke" will always be the best Studio Ghibli- and Hayao Miyazaki-film because it's stunning and made for young teenagers and adults, "Spirited Away" is a children's movie.

What do you think?

It's a Miyazaki-San movie, like Mononoké, like a heart vision. Feelings of better or not are totally inaccurate. The Wind Rises came from the deep feelings and personnal life from Miyazaki-San, and peoples will said, isn't his best film.
Real fans shouldn't care about ranking antics. Kiki's Delivery Service is rated as commercial, but for me, it's heart warmfull.

And the music from Joe Hisaishi is so epic in every times, even for the huge deep fantasy of Spirited Away.
6th Station track reach the meaning of the life so close, it was really an extra-sensorial experiment in theaters...

The two movies aren't comparable in theme, intent or style...the only thing i'd say they have in common is they're both paragons...peerless examples of the medium....

:D why squabble over which is better, and not just enjoy both of them?

Sure!

the spirit of the forest or whatever the *beep* in mononoke is one of my favorite characters ever

Even though I'm not a fan of Japanese animated films in general, I 100% agree that Princess Mononoke is a much better film than Spirited Away. The story and characters of PM are just much more involving than the repeated cycle of nonsense in Spirited Away.

I wonder whether Princess Mononoke is more appealing to the Western viewer because it's more conventional, with adventures, perils and a baddy you can hate? Whereas what you call the 'cycle of nonsense' in Spirited Away, and the slow, contemplative pace, is far more culturally specific to Japan.

I don't really give a rat's ass which one you thinks is better, or which one anyone thinks is better. Hell, I don't care which one *I* think is better! Both are incredible and amazing. GTFO with your pissing contest.

If I had to pick just one I'd agree that Princess Mononoke is the better. But Spirited Away is still an achingly beautiful masterwork, and the pair of them are my all-time favourite animated films.

Even though I love Princess Mononoke (it's my 3rd favourite Studio Ghibli film, if you exclude Nausicaa as a Ghibli title since it isn't done under their name), but Spirited Away is my 2nd favourite from them, so I naturally like that one more. Laputa: Castle in the Sky is my personal favourite Ghibli/Miyazaki title though!

Totally agree. I know many say this is a good coming-of-age story and are constantly talking about how emotional it is, but I just don't see it (or rather, feel it). Kiki is a MUCH better coming-of-age story, and so is The Lion King IMO. Those movies actually made me feel something. For coming-of-age I would still say nothing trumps the Toy Story trilogy, though.
SA is an okay Japanese version of Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of Oz, and one of my least favorite Ghibli movies. Coming from the Hunger Games forums where EVERYONE complains about it's similarities to Battle Royale I can't just ignore that Spirited Away receive almost NO criticism for borrowing heavily from those Western movies. If it was the other way around, and Alice in Wonderland borrowed from Spirited Away, I would bet the Japanophiles would be dogging it's board 24/7.
Except Porco Rosso I like all Ghibli movies, however, but some more than others. Laputa, Mononoke and Kiki are my top 3, in that order, with the rest in no specific order in between.

Your only real criticism here is the story. I will not accept being aimed more at children to be a valid criticism as it does not make a movie comparatively lesser in terms of quality. And the score is extremely subjective and generally not that important to most viewers unless it is downright obnoxious. I've never heard anyone complain about it, so I guess our anecdotal evidence is equal on that account. And as to the characters, I don't really see reason to address such a nonspecific claim of one set being 'better' than the other - I can't possibly determine what you might mean by that as I see nothing wrong with either set of characters.

In terms of the story, if you really want to quibble about the best Miyazaki movie (and really I think this is a stupid conversation to be having as all the films I have seen were excellent in their own ways, with the exception of Ponyo which just wasn't as good), then it isn't Mononoke, but the earlier Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which thematically is superior.

But as I said, a silly argument to be having. Also, I should note that the above discussion was objective. Subjectively, Spirited Away probably is my favourite for personal reasons - it is responsible for my introduction to and love of anime. I saw the trailer for it on television long before I was able to see the entire film, but just that small segment intrigued me and opened up my mind. It therefore occupies a special place for me. I mean, for the same reason in the world of science fiction I will always love the original Star Trek above all other Star Treks that exist and will exist - it is certain (and Mr. Spock will always be my favourite).
