Most overrated movie on IMDB?

I went into this with high expectations and an open mind. Could not have been more disappointed. Bland story, average animation, forgettable characters. I guess you have to be a child when you first see this to be awed by such a run-of-the-mill production.

Not sure if serious...if it is, stay away from animation, it's obviously not your thing. If this is a troll post, you get a C at best, you pass, but this was still lazy.

reply

I'm not a troll, just expressing my disappointment. The movie had been built-up so much in my mind from all the reviews and the IMDB rating... the reality is that it's a strictly average film, in my opinion.

Not reality then, is it?

The story was whimsical.

The animation top notch.

And the characters unforgettable.

I was in my 20s when I first saw it. Not at all a child.

Let's be bad guys.

I should say that your original post isn't the only thing that made me respond in the manner I did. You've given ridiculously low ratings to every anime film you've rated, which shows either trolling or an extreme bias. Assuming your ratings are serious, you seem to think that anything not Pixar or Disney is worth your time. In particular, you can't be an animation fan and hate a specific type of animation. So if it's "only your opinion", fine, but like I said above, keep away from animation because it clearly isn't your thing. Not all animated films are designed purely to get a laugh from you. And no, your modest ratings for Watership Down and Waltz with Bashir don't convince me otherwise either.

I didn't like it either. Re-watched it after some years, but still not a fan.

You have gave all anime films low ratings and maybe you need to stop watching anime if it's not your thing.

I hope that there is an Evangelion video game where you can beat Asuka up!

reply

Even with an 8.6, this movie is still UNDERRATED.

Um, no(?)

You want to talk overrated Animation? As a PIXAR and animation fan, I feel that belongs to "Up."

Sure, the Carl/Ellie scenes are seared in many person's brains, but that's all people really recall about the film. I've never heard someone enjoy more than a few areas of that film.

Spirited Away did something that i don't think any other animated feature has done: Watching it the first time, I had no idea where the story was going to go. It felt like anything could happen to Chihiro.

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

- Toy Story 3 (9/10)

Well then, let me introduce you to someone who believes Up is so much more than that first 8 minutes or so...me! I'll use bullet points for easy access!

-The animation of course is fantastic. Not the best or most interesting among CG films, but certainly among the best.

-The message of the film is a rather simple one, but it's explored so deeply and thoroughly that if makes it's impact all the much greater.

-The opening is great of course, but it's not the most emotional moment of the film. If you don't know what moment it actually is, you didn't get the film's intent.

-This movie is one of the funniest I've seen. I laughed so much more during this film than during so of those so called animated comedies. From Russell, Kevin the bird, the dogs, to Carl himself, it was an all star comedy cast!

-The writing is about as perfect as a Pixar film has gotten. Only The Incredibles and Inside Out compare in that department. There is no single scene or line of dialogue that is wasted in this film.

-The film is just a flat out fun adventure, we could always use more of those.

Bottom line, I don't find Up or Spirited Away to be overrated in the least, they deserve every bit of praise they've gotten. I hate that "o" word anyway, but if you twisted my arm enough I would call The Lion King the most overrated animated film. It's the only film I know in which it's fans consider it to be on a "golden pedestal" and "above criticism".

OH MY GOD, THANK YOU! It's typically towards the lower middle on my Pixar list and people always question that. It's seriously not a great film. Beautifully animated and an emotional beginning but that's it.

Whatever the weather my ass! It's hot as hell out here!

Loved the visuals. While the plot contains crazy characters, it sure fits my description of a movie made for dreams. We dream of crazy characters and bizarre sequences during our dreams.

I like this movie a lot, but it's not great. It's definitely in the style of like real fairy tales (which have strange events that don't seem logical or fitting at all but they happen anyways) which, while interesting, doesn't exactly scream amazing cinema. Great animation though, the characters are intriguing and the voice cast is stellar. It's just not an amazing movie. Imo.

I don't quite understand you, Reklawlah - using terms such as 'bland, average, run-of-the-mill' would seem to imply that you've seen too many films in which the child protagonist has her parents turn into animals and finds she has slipped through reality into the world of eight million weary Japanese gods? Happens all the time in the movies you watch, does it?

reply

I would say that this is the one movie that deserves its spot on IMDB. I enjoyed it when it first released and I am pretty sure I will enjoy today. I love the visuals and the story was nice. It is one of the those films that does not overstay it's welcome, and certainly worth it's runtime.
