Did any guy tear up during this film?

I did.

I did. And I had to call my brother right after I had finished watching the movie.

the look in the brothers eyes after he asks alvin if he rode the mower all the way to see him gets me everytime

This Bellini is starting to look like a real Kapuchnik.

I bought this DVD in a triple pack DVD years and years ago, with The Shawshank Redemption and Midnight Cowboy. I think it was the 'Barrel of Laughs' set ;).

The Straight Story was the only one of the 3 that had me proper roaring like a little baby baby. I found it hard to believe that Richard Farnsworth wasn't a regular joe rather than an actor (I knew he was, but still...). It's an incredible performance, and a film I never watch with anyone else, for fear of ridicule. It's ace.

yeah I cry several times every time I watch it: Rose's story, the bar scene, the bit with the priest when Alvin tells him that he just wants to watch the stars with his brother like they used to, and of course the ending. I thinks it's Lynch's best film (I like mostly all of them)

To reply to the original post - yes i teared up a few times. In fact, i'm still tearing typing this!

That old man was an angel. A kind, warmhearted old man. I picked up that he would be like that from the very first seconds i saw him in the movie.

Grade: A-.

An angel? Huh, I´m afraid you´re very far off the mark with that one.

Not meant as an insult, but you sounded JUST like Scott there...

Let´s not be deceived by appearances.

Well, actually I´ve noticed a couple of times myself lately that I´ve unwittingly used some of Purcell´s verbal flourishes - like "get it right, please" (edited it out though upon noticing, shortly afterwards) or "read and learn" (although I didn´t ask my opponent to read and learn from my posts - it concerned the history of eastern Europe and I had historical literature in mind as the source of wisdom). Scott´s a virus to be sure.

As for Straight Story though, I just think that seeing Alvin as such an angel is a very superficial reading and whoever believes that to be the case, needs to give the film another look and contemplate the various sinister undertones the film has (and which are - characteristically for Lynch - never directly addressed). There´s a lot more to this movie than meets the eye.

True, true. SS used to be my least-favorite Lynch film and it took three viewings for it to get into my top 100.

A very emotional movie, with a fantastic performance by Farnsworth. The bit that got me was strangly when he thanked Danny Riordan for putting him up and Danny replies " it's been a genuine pleasure having you Alvin" - for some reason that small scene was the one that brought the tears. I'm interested in the comment by "franzkabuki" about some sinister undertones in the movie - I did not pick up on anything sinister myself, and would be interested on your take of that aspect of the movie. This is a movie that gets better with each viewing, it's truly a remarkable performance by Farnsworth, and when you consider that he is in just about every scene of the movie, it just boggles the mind that was able to keep that intensity for the whole movie. The other remarkable part is knowing this is a Lynch movie, SO different from anything else he has done. A "small" epic in every way.

I think you´d be better off looking up an essay of The Straight Story on a site called Senses Of Cinema (it can also be accessed thru External Reviews on the IMDb page here) - it basically outlines as well as expands on my own thoughts about the film. And it´s certainly easier for me... not up to such a workload at the moment.

I just saw it yesterday. And I did too. :P

I always tear up!

(raises his hand) Guilty. By the time he reaches his brothers place, it really builds to a waterworks.

Yes and an amazing can't stop watching film, 5 stars for me

The bar room scene was so emotional and so simply done. I was impressed by how restrained David Lynch was with this film and how effective it was. The other film that has brought me close to tears was Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart.
