Does the rape scene seem a bit gratuitous?

That maybe Mr Verhoven made that scene particularly for the adolescents and pervy audience to masturbate over, and that perhaps he was going just a bit too far with that scene? I didn't see any strong moral or ethical meaning behind it, I just think it was soft-core rape porn.

Not that I'm complaining, Rhona Mitra is hot.

I didn't mind it in the theatrical edition, but the director's cut (which is slightly extended and lingers on the woman sobbing in a really upsetting and overlong additional shot) was way too gratuitous and alarmingly depressing compared to the rest of the film.

Rape is one of those subjects that has to be handled just right or else it doesn't work at all. I thought the trimmed down theatrical cut was perfectly edited... the extended scene in the director's cut was too much. (Everything else in the director's cut was fine, though.)

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

I disagree. The way the camera lingers over her sobbing on her bed, you get to see her in her pajamas curled up in such a way that she shows off the voluptuous curvature of her legs and a ss. She looks so gorgeous and sexy lying there sobbing in bed. It's not gratuitous at all. By showing how irresistably sexy her body is, the director is explaining why Sebastian felt that he HAD to fark her and that any red blooded man, invisible or no, could barely resist the temptation to have his wicked way with Rhona. It makes the audience more sympathetic to Sebastian. You understand why he had to do it.

Well it showed the inner desires of Sebastian and why he wanted to escape after killing all their teammates...

What good can you get if you are invisible? Even if you steal money, you can spend it like normal people do....you cant have too much power as people will hunt you..

But if you are a cold hearted rapist, the entire world is your oyster...and most of the women wont even know who or what raped her...especially if they are on the religious side....

It's definitely questionable. Seems to me like he was going for voyeuristic titillation while maintaining deniability, like it was just about showing how evil Sebastian was becoming. Uh huh.
