I have to say, and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this...

But this movie seriously gets better and better every time I see it. It's simply hilarious, and although it's different (I don't mean better or worse) than the Coen's other films, it's still a damn fine movie. Every time it has been on lately I try to make sure I catch at least a few minutes. This movie would be nothing without Clooney, whose razor sharp delivery of lines and amusing facial expressions completely made this movie work. Some great, GREAT quotable lines too...

"Freddy, are you NUTS? You're forgetting about Kershner!"
"Baby Field Greens" "What did you call me??"
"Heinz, the Baron Krauss von Espy"
"She Specificated a -SILLY- man..."
"I told him it was a no go..."
"Everybody likes berries"

I could go on and on, but I won't. I just wanted to say that I thought this movie was great, just as good as any of their other films. People seem to REALLY hate Clooney, though, no matter what he's in, which I just don't understand. He's not the amusing painter from the Facts of Life anymore, people!

As a devoted Coen bros. fan, I definitely think Intolerable Cruelty is one of their most underrated films.

You got to the very point man. It gets better every time I watch it. I seriously can't understand why it's so under-rated.

This film is hilarious! Just watched it a few minutes ago for the first time. Had a few good laughs, not a grin or a giggle, but involuntary and out loud, the best ones. The story line is just so funny, great lines too. It feels almost fresh amongst all the lame and semi-comical movies out there. Really good performance by George Clooney. Absolutely loved the guy that leads the laywer firm with all the wires and medical equipment. Hilarious!

Who can hate this movie??? Of course with the exception of the average cinema snobs who feel they have a 'unique' (waahaha) and thorough understanding of what a movie should be like...

I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on this movie. Great comedy with a razor sharp performance from George Clooney.

reply

I totally agree. This movie was excellent!

I hear you guys quoting most of the movie's funniest parts, but you've missed my favorite part:

In the very first scene when they're in a courtroom, Clooney and assistant aren't even listening to the other lawyer or the woman's testimony at all, and you can hear what the woman is saying, "He became more and more into the sex...sometimes there would be a gizmo...he had some of his workers at the factory design a device called the "Intruder," and he used the parts from our vacuum cleaner to build it...and I couldn't use that vacuum cleaner for several months." That is just way too funny, especially when the other attorney asks, "A gizmo?"

Also, I thought it was pretty funny when the baron says he works at "Le Pantalon Rouge" and George Clooney just calls the place "The Red Trousers." Funny when I saw that for the first time.

The salad order is also waaay too funny. "I'd like...Baby Field of Greens." "What did you call me?" "I...didn't call you anything...I'll just have a green salad." "What the *beep* color would it be."

I'd go so far as to say that this is the coen brothers' second greatest "laugh out loud" movie (the first being Lebowski). Oh Brother and Fargo may be better movies, but I don't really think they were as funny as this one.

^ Clooney was alright...but Geoffrey Rush!!!!!! Now that man can act!

***What I find interesting is that you thought Clooney was good, whereas I thought he was the only thing about the movie that sucked.***

I'm by no means a Clooney fan. But I think his comic performances in both this, and Oh, Brother, were fantastic.

I love the fact that his comic characters in both movies are kind of a self depricating version of his leading man status. Vain, self absorbed, idiots that are utterly clueless about how others persieve them.

this is completely bizarre, an imdb thread that doesnt descend into childish name calling!
i love this film, and it definately gets better with every viewing, clooney is brilliant.
the ONLY thing i dislike about this film is 'nail that ass'. its funny at first, but it's said far too many times.

I'll add my voice to those that agree that this is a very under-rated film. Very very funny. Sometimes the following scene pops into my head and I start grinning like a fool no matter where I am or what I'm doing: It's the courtroom scene when Klaus the Baron Von Espy states that Catherine Zeta Jones is a gold-digger and Edward Herrman leaps across the table attacking him.
Attorney: "Objection you Honor - choking the witness"
Judge: "I'm going to allow it"

Wonderful dialog and comic acting throughout, something you rarely see these days.

That scene got one of the biggest laughs from me while I watching. But the one that made me smile the most was the conclusion of the whole opening sequence, where the pretensious Hollywood soap producer was laughing maniacally and polaroiding his puctured ass. This whole sequence was one of the best openinings to a comedy I've ever seen.

I love all the Coen bros movies, and I HATE romantic comedies. This movie cracked me up (except maybe for the nail ass thing) Anyway I thought it was totally hilarious and I wanna watch it all over again soon..
like the other people said the joy of the Coen movies is that you can watch them again and again and you always see something else.Clooney is usually lousy but I thought he was pretty good here.
as in O brother which is one of my all time fave movies. Especially the music

reply

Definitely in my top 20 romantic comedies of all time.

Yes, I saw it at the theater a few years ago, and enjoyed it even more on cable tonight -- it's a classic that doesn't depend on surprise twists - it has wit and charm and beautiful people with talent.

I miss Big Band music and talented singers. Leonard Cohen is my idol. Civility, harmony, unity!
