sharei agree
i hate preston
i fast forward the scene where he is talking to that angel chick
ugh he annoys me
He didn't carry it around. He wrote the letter freshman year when he met her but then she dated Mike Dexter and blah blah blah so he never gave it to her. And if you don't have a reason to get over a crush, sometimes you don't. It's also not weird for him to have kept the letter all that time. It's something meaningful to him. And on the last night of senior year when he might never see her again he decided to give it to her so she'd know. It's not all that weird.

I find this thread very sad and disappointing, but it explains a great deal.
There's an age-old question: Why do beautiful girls usually end up with guys who treat them like crap? The answer is to be found in these posts.
For whatever reason, genuine and sincere romantic feeling -- of the kind that Preston displays -- seems to put a lot of girls off.
And that's very, very sad, because I'll bet that a lot of the Prestons in this world would actually treat the girls whom they love with great respect and tenderness, if they ever got the chance. Heck, a Preston would treat the girl he adores like gold, and would always put her needs first, even ahead of his own. Never miss a birthday, never miss an anniversary. Be devoted and caring. Be interested in everything about her -- every thought, every feeling. Love her for who she is.
But no -- sincere emotions like that? No thanks. That's...what were the words in this thread?...Oh, yes. "Psychotic." "Stalker."
Geez.
You're all correct, of course -- much better to be with a serial cheater, or an abuser, or a self-absorbed jacka** like Mike. God forbid a girl would ever be with someone who really loves her.
I have a boy like that! :o) And I love it. My boyfriend's like Preston, not like Mike. I've dated a few Mike Dexter's before, and finding a boy like Preston was/is incredible.

You hit it on the head dude.
Yes it was a bit strange, unconventional. The thing was it was real and genuine. There are so many fakes in today's world.
Yeah he may of not literally said how he felt, but at least she knew.
I use to stalk girls on the facebook for up to 2 months in 2005...I really creeped some of them out (haha)!
shareI don't think the note is that unrealistic or creepy. Think about all the notes you keep? A lot of people have drawers full of every note they wrote/received. Oh and a girl wouldn't necessarily find the note creepy because this girl in my class keeps a love note in her wallet that this guy gave her like 4 years ago. She obviously found it endearing even if she didn't necessarily get with that guy.
Anyway I bet Preston probably just kept the note in some drawer and didn't think about it all the time. Every once in awhile he'd go and change something in it, but he didn't dwell on it. If anything it was probably like keeping a journal to him so that he could let his feelings out. And you know when a guy actually falls in love with a girl that he does obsess over her (so obviously you've never fallen in love or known a guy friend who had fallen in love).
But anyway I'll agree that them getting together is unrealistic because they both barely knew each other. I think at the end it's basically Amanda deciding that Preston is a good guy, and he's worth her taking a chance on him. Luckily it works out for them. Though I will say that I didn't think this was the greatest romance. If anything I preferred Seth Green's character with the redhead. Something about them was really cute and the buildup actually made it believable that they would be a couple.

I'm "being real" and most teens (boys and girls) who have crushes on people are too shy to *ever* tell the object of their affetion about their feelings. It's HEALTHY to write these things down. Therapists tell people to write out their emotions so they can, in a way, release them.
How many girls write over and over and over again, "Mrs. John Smith" all over everything? Is that stalker behavior? NO. It's normal, age appropriate professions of "love".
It saddens me that people (OP) can't see the difference between normal puppy love and sadistic stalker behavior. Wow.
You wish you had a stalker like this. And what's so bad about being a stalker, anyway? Women need men who are paying attention. I would understand if he was a rapist, walking around with a knife. But he is a normal guy, who is deeply in love and care for her. Even after she called him ass hole he still loves her. We need more "stalkers" like him.
I love Jason Segel. Actually, I watched "Can't Hardly Wait" because Segel was in it. He had a very small role but I don't care. I love his work, his voice, his eyes. I like everything about him. Some people could call my crazy stalker, but I'm not a stalker, I am a huge Jason Segel fan since long time ago and I will follow his work, I will go on YouTube and look for a new interview and I will google him to find out if something new happened in his life. I will continue to dream of meeting him some day and just say "Hey, Jason, you are an amazing actor and a good man". Hopefully, I will have a drink with him. lol
Dracula, I love your eyes!
i thought the defenition of "stalker" was a person that keeps persuing some1 they want a relationship with,or had 1 with, that can't understand the word "no". he approached her once, she declined,he left her alone.she found the letter & reconsidored. where's the stalking?
sharePreston wasn't a stalker by definition. Actually, he wasn't a stalker at all.
I just watched this a few hours ago and he came across as genuinely nice guy. The audience never gets a glimpse of him outside of that one night; we never see his actions towards JLH character during high school. I presume that Preston writes his "love" letter (I like to call it a letter of confession) to help cope how he feels about her. If any, Preston would be the the admire from a distant, and he seems intelligent and in control of his feelings to not become a stalker. He pours all his feelings into writing which is a healthy way of letting daily frustrations and thoughts escape your mind. By seeing your thoughts on paper, one can asses the situation; he has deep feelings for JLH character, and maybe it can turn into something special. When JLH character unknowingly confronts the Preston in her letter, she mentions and I paraphrase " . . . . and you obsess about one tiny little moment . . . . " which Preston does not. Preston in the beginning remembers the moments that they shared/had in common but never obsesses over it. He looks at them as a sign and uses that as hope (false hope as first turned into destiny). If you had one shot at telling a girl how you felt, wouldn't you "stalk" (read: desperately trying to get her alone to talk). Preston was on a mission, and he didn't want to waste the night wandering "what if?".
Even if we didn't get to see Preston outside of that one night, it's safe to say that Preston had a life outside of his letter of confession. He was obviously a very bright kid and was admitted into Dartmouth (studying English, maybe?) and was involved in the Journalism Club and the schools swim team; also he seemed to be well liked by mostly everyone at the party. Not bad for a normal guy you see walking down your hallway.
Uh, yeah, not a stalker. Not in any way. He didn't carry the letter around. If you'll remember, his friend was very surprised that he brought the letter with him. It's obviously something that rarely, if ever, leaves his room. And he didn't give the letter to Amanda, she found it. It's actually a pretty good twist, because it allows Amanda to choose Preston rather than be persuaded by him. She found the letter, liked it's contents, and decided to give the writer a chance.
Lets wash it. With Rocks!
No he wasn't. :-) He was just a guy inlove......now granted, if he had been fat and/or ugly, I'm sure most people would agree with you, which leaves the question open to all guys - What do you want more? A whopper with french fries from Burger King or a pretty girlfriend? Something to think about. :-)
(Hey, at least the whopper and french fries don't talk back, right?)
