Who was worse Byron Hadley or Percy Wetmore?

I'd say Percy was worse. Hadley had some sense of honor. He upheld his end of the bargain with the beer and protected Andy against the Sisters. Percy, had absolutely no redeeming qualities other than he was apparently a good nephew.

reply

Hadley was worse for doing who knows what over a longer period of time. He killed more people too. One could argue Percy had a sense of humor as well. Hadley only protected Andy for financial benefit. Percy would've done the same if he had the chance.

reply

I'd have to go with Percy.

reply

Hadley was the worst of the two.

reply

Percy was far worse, a true sadist, absolutely fucked in the head - he deliberately screwed up that poor little guy’s execution to give him a nightmarishly painful death. He stomped on the guy’s pet mouse and enjoyed it.

Hadley was a brute and crossed the line into shooting an innocent guy, but he didn’t delight in torture and killing the way Percy did, like some sick kid pulling the wings off flies for fun.

reply

It's a hard call, but I'd say Percy. He just loved having power over people and using it as sadistically as possible. Hadley for all his brutality seemed to at least be a bit more predictable. While I don't agree with Hadley's over the top brutal responses to prisoner's who get out of line, at least with him I'd feel confident that I know how to avoid his wrath just by laying low and not attracting attention to myself.

reply

Exactly. If you’re someone like Red or Brooks, Hadley’s not going to be a problem for you. Learn the rules, keep out of his way and you’re fine. Tommy was an exception due to some unlikely circumstances and the warden going nuts.

Percy would love to torment a harmless old coot like Brooks. He would have tortured and killed Jake just to watch the old man cry, and then find ways to torture and kill Brooks for his own personal sick entertainment.

Percy the sadist was another level of evil compared to Hadley the brute.

reply

What about compared with Hamidou from Midnight Express?

reply

Never seen.

reply

Alright --- Been up and down the cast list on IMDB and I cant find anyone named Byron Hadley, Actor or Character

Percy was a POS because he was spoiled all his life had the job only because he was related to someone High up in the state

reply

The main guard and stooge of Warden Norton in The Shawshank Redemption.

reply

Ahhhh --- Clancy Brown --- Couldn't connect the 2 movies in my brain although both written by King and directed by Darabount

In answer to the original question --- Hadley was by far the better man

reply

Percy for sure, he was evil through and through, while I feel that Hadley had a pinch of humanity within him.

reply

I didn't see any humanity in him, pinch or otherwise.

Forgetting his poor lullaby singing to the prisoners, he didn't care when his "asshole" brother died (he was upset about the tax on his inheritance) and the smirk he gave when Warden Norton told him to give Andy another month in the hole to "think about it".

None.

reply

He didn’t have to buy and bring the guys beers (and in buckets of ice!), he could have forced Andy to submit the legal forms for him through strong-arming him or worse even.
“The colossal prick even managed to sound magnanimous.”
It was just a moment, but a moment nonetheless.

reply

I was going to say Hadley provided the beers for future considerations, but he didn't seem that bright, so I guess that constitutes a "pinch".

reply

Percy because he was more weaselly and despicable, especially when he was enjoying watching the inmates suffer while getting fried with the electric chair.

It was satisfying to see Percy suffer more for his actions as he's the one who deserved it.

reply

Hadley was probably the biggest reason Shawshank was a relatively safe prison. There were no prison riots, no gang wars, most of the inmates lived in relative harmony. Once Hadley was made away of Andy's bullies, that was taken care of toot sweet.

reply

Despite me not liking Hadley I do admire him for making Shawshank a relatively safe prison as he did his job very well despite his corruption, plus his personality was far more predictable than Percy which alone makes me have more respect for him.
