Linda Fiorentino ruined this movie

While I am a huge fan of Kevin Smith's movies and I do like Dogma, I just feel like this movie would have been better if it wouldn't have had the monotone of Linda Fiorentino's performance. The worst case was after Rufus fell from the sky and they went to Mooby's to eat. When Rufus asked what they were eating, her response was "egg---a---moo-by--muf-fin". I mean the Terminator doesn't even sound this robotic. Did she just wake up from a deep sleep right before the cameras started rolling or what? It's no wonder that Kevin Smith will never make another movie with her in it. And we fans are all the better for it.

I agree, I'm not of a fan of her dry, pseudo-cool, sarcastic bullsh*t.

Pretty much ruined Men In Black too.

reply

I agree with you there. And did you notice how she wasn't asked back for the sequel? LOL.

BIG WHIT!

reply

Lol Even all the times she was yelling her tone didn't change. That's amazing to me.

There's a sequel???

That's what I thought too, but the guy was responding to someone who had mentioned she ruined Men in Black (which she did) and then saying she wasn't asked back for Men in Black II

Linda Fiorentino wouldn't show up on the set of Dogma when shooting started because she wanted the production to buy her a new car. Not rent her a car. Buy her one. It wasn't in the contract she signed, so she was willing to run the production over budget with delays to get a car she hadn't earned. All because she thought she was the STAR. Meanwhile, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck -- who individually have more name recognition than her a hundred times over -- showed up to set on time ready to go. Fiorentino got the free car, but that little stunt has cost her work worth far, far more than the value of the car. Stupid bitch.

Dogma's my absolute favorite Kevin Smith movie, and while I wouldn't say she ruined it, I do think she was the least appealing part of it (and yeah, I'm counting the rubber poop demon over her!). The part where she and the Metatron are in the Mexican restaurant, she does this constant, smug, eye-rolling thing the entire time that drove me up the wall! It's like okay, this guy with wings appears in your bedroom at night and transports you to a restaurant in the blink of an eye, and you're going to act like an annoying, know-it-all preteen? wth. And did anyone else feel like her chemistry just really didn't mix with the rest of the cast?

Yeah, she's the least of the film, and we're better off without her. (In my own opinion, of course.)

Atlantis Morisette was the worst part of the movie

I concur with the above statements and opinions on Linda Florentino in this movie.....

Lowered the score a bit for me. Didn't realise Smith thought she was difficult to work with...but it shows in the picture...

I did like her very much in "The Last Seduction" perhaps just for the sex scenes I dunno...., so I was dissapointed.

reply

She was excellent in the Last Seduction.

Bit that bugged me most I think is when the metatron mentions I think the killing of the first born, and she interrupts with "ah, the last plague.." like she's an expert, when all along before this she's all "wtf are you who are angels what's going on?" like she's never heard any religious stories. The poop monster was the worst part of the film for me but she came second, I just didn't find her likeable at all.

Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...

It is amazing to me how many people miss the point. Her character was SUPPOSED to be jaded, cynical, and monotone. She had lost her faith!!!!!! Did you people even see the movie?

How would you expect such a person to act? Skipping happily through the tulips?

thankyou mark-1883...i was sure someone would say that eventually...

although her voice is annoying... i like her for some reason...:)

reply

I am in complete agreement with both you and mark-1883!

reply

People are too dumb to understand that. Especially on the internet. I bet most people here don't even realise she was acting.

But it leads to Metatron's deliciously snarky reply: "Tell someone you're the Metatron, and they stare at you blankly; mention something out of a Charlton Heston movie, and suddenly everyone's a theology expert! May I continue uninterrupted?!?"

reply

Do you realise Fiorentino didn't write the script? Why aren't you blaming Smith?

reply

Because he thinks it's a real person. He obviously escaped from some kind of institution.

reply

In a bad film with more than its share of bad acting, she was especially bad. In other films (most notably 'The Last Seduction') she has been good. But not here. It's a rare thing to get a good performance from an actor who's pissed off with the director and other actors (as we're told was the case).

Look, Kevin Smith just fulfilled one of his teenage fantasies, having the hot chick from "Gotcha" in one of his movies without a bra. When you're as cool as Smith, you can get away with that stuff.

reply

You're probably right about the fantasy-fulfilling... But that's not an excuse.

I love this movie immensely and rewatch it regularly, and I always find myself screaming in frustration at the screen everytime "Bethany" opens her mouth.
Why, oh why, Kevin?

reply

I strongly urge you people view the deleted scenes...Linda's performance in the abortion clinic when she was telling her story to the younger girl was riveting.

Again, she was SUPPOSED to be jaded, defeated, and cynical!

reply

yes she was supposed to be jaded and cynical ect ect. and she did a bad job of it. there is no defending her performance. hundreds of people have done better jobs of acting a cynical/jaded characters than she did.

reply

Really? Hundreds? Wow. That's a lot.

reply

hundreds.

reply

Maybe thousands. Perhaps even....... millions?

I agree with (almost) everything that was said in this thread. I hate that dry, sarcastic manner in which she speaks. Made me wanna smack her upside the head.

reply

Agreed 100%. I watched Dogma thinking 'Was she drunk during the filming of this movie?' cos thats what her performance seemed like. Not dry, sarcastic, she just seemed drunk.
