This film was a great idea but Jim Carrey can not help pullin that stupid rubbery face and actin the clown.... The film makers should've cast a serious actor to play Trueman. Carrey just turned it into a comedy act. It would have been so much better and more realistic without Jim Carrey's rubbery over the top facial expressions and his over the top chicken walks! This film didnt need that! It wasnt a comedy. The story idea didnt need comedy in it!
I can't take this post seriously, it must be a joke. Were we watching the same movie? He barely pulled any of that stuff in this movie, he was relatively normal in the movie besides the parts where he was talking infront of the mirror.
Just finished watching it. Honestly, I couldn't imagine any other actor in that role. This movie is NOT a 'comedy act' at all, it just has a tiny bit of Carrey's quirkiness, and if anything it is because of Carrey's quirkiness that this movie has heart - otherwise it would be too morose and cynical (concerning the theme) with someone like Gary Oldman (who was the initial choice) in the role.
Uhm, actually, it IS a comedy. Although I can't believe I'm saying this now, because I usually explain this movie as "more of a twisted drama", because people tend to initially put it in the "comedy"-genre just because it stars Jim Carrey. In actuality it IS a bit of a dark comedy, but a big part of this is also very deep and kind of dramatic even though it's a bit of a crazy situation. Also, I don't remember Carrey acting like a moron (or whatever you're describing) much at all. It kind of seems like you're just forcing that idea over the movie because you expect it from him, but he didn't do it. Besides, he's a great dramatic actor, and you probably haven't seen more than 'Ace Ventura' or something. He was perfect for this, otherwise it would've been boring and much too serious movie. "A great idea.", give me a break. This is one of those great unique films that was blessed to have Carrey in it and that showed he can do much more than just talking out of his butt.
In the end, just because you probably wanted to see a much darker and serious (or "dark & gritty?) version of this concept doesn't make this movie bad. As others have said, you've probably missed the point of different things in it. It WOULD have been different without Jim Carrey, but in a bad way. It's kind of about his "derpy" and ignorant character that made the TV-show in the movie work, and subsequently the movie itself as well. It MIGHT have worked with a more boring serious character, but it wouldn't have been as interesting or even as good.
Also, this is actually a good piece of film-making of which you can learn something. Maybe give it another watch and try to be more open to it and not force your goofy image onto it.
If ever there was a role made perfect by casting, this is it. I can't picture anyone doing a better acting job. I was surprised Jim Carrey didn't receive an Academy Award nomination. He was terrific.
They made a show about a resident who had an interesting and amusing personality
No, they made a show with the first baby that was born on schedule, remember? They were just damn lucky that the baby turned out to have an interesting and amusing personality. :)

Such a dimwitted post... If he was really no good for the part then the least you could have done was suggest someone who could have done it better. And for the record, Director Peter Weir specifically had Carrey in mind to play Truman when he first read the script. Nailed it!
The O.P. was a 'flame', or someone who knows nothing about film-making. The biggest clue: didn't give his suggestion for an actor to play Truman. A serious critique would have to include that. (Truman is now available on Netflix, by the way -- and Ed Harris is stupendous as the show's creator). I guess the question is: why did this O.P. garner 3+ pages of replies from supposedly intelligent folks like me?
Clue #2 - never comes back to the thread to respond to any of the replies & defend his position.
(Note - since you inadvertently double- posted, I'm replying to your first, with the thought that it's prolly easier to delete the second than the first...)
