lets face it. everyone watched it for the sinking scene. prior to that its a cliche garbage love story

a soap opera with a good ending. thats it

That’s the broad consensus.

I will say though that the best thing about Titanic is Billy Zane’s Cal. His subtle digs at Jack and general snibbery are comedy gold 🀣

Certainly you'll love this one. πŸ§¦β€‹

Even the ending is too ridiculous.

reply

It's a good big-budget period piece with the action hook of the prolonged sinking sequence.

reply

Yep, that's pretty much it. Without the heavily publicized sinking scenes, there wouldn't be much there. "Titanic" (1953) and "A Night to Remember" (1958) were more compelling, dramatically, and also had pretty damned good visual effects.

I just watched it this evening for the first time since 1997. I pretty much loathed it in 1997, except for a few unintended chuckles at the risible dialogue and, yes, possibly the sinking -- which is technically impressive and Cameron gets to draw on his action film experience.

But I tend to be be more forgiving of films in 2024, so I was slightly surprised to find myself feeling exactly the same way. I think it's an insultingly bad film.

reply

Lol such an exaggeration. It's clearly a exceptionally crafted movie hence the 11 Oscars. You can dislike aspects of the movie but it's an exceptionally well made movie on many fronts.

reply

Oh, I'm not exaggerating my own opinions. I mean precisely what I say. I don't need your help with that.

reply

Well your opinion has zero substance and you're being called out on it.

reply

I'm not sure what you imagine yourself to mean by 'calling [somebody] out' on their opinion. All you've done in reality is offered your own opinion, which I respect. It's your opinion. But don't tell me what my opinion can be. That's what an insecure adolescent would do. Grow up.

reply

Hiding behind 'it's my opinion' does not mean you are exempt from criticism. Opinions can be stupid, especially when they're not backed up with any substance. Here's one - 'Seth Rogen is a better actor than Daniel Day Lewis'.

reply

This clown can't handle anyone who disagrees with him.

reply

Oh so someone else can't disagree with the mass majority but you can. I'm so glad you used Oscars as a measurement of quality. That means Phoenix is a better Joker than Nicholson. Phoenix won the Oscar for his performance Nicholson was not even nominated. Oh and anytime you need an education on what cultural impact means I'm here offering free lessons. I educated you last time and I'm happy to do it again buttercup.

You can say that to every movie from James Cameron:

Terminator 1: A good man has to save the world and protect a girl he falls in love with.

Aliens: A good woman has to protect a girl she falls in love with.

The Abyss: A good man has to save the world and protect a girl he falls in love with.

Terminator 2: A good robot has to save the world and protect a boy he falls in love with.

True Lies: A good man had to save the world and protect his lover.

Titanic: Romeo and Julia on a sinking ship.

Avatar: Dances with Wolves on an alien planet.

The TV movie starring Catherine Zeta Jones is a better Titanic movie than this one. It's just deals with the facts. Even 'Raise The Titanic' is a better movie.

This movie is undone by a shitty script and annoying characters. Leo Di Caprio has never been a likable actor. The story of his audition is surprising, considering that Cameron doesn't suffer fools and Leo made a fool of him.
