This especially have ALWAYS bothered me

No mistake about it, for me....
Spawn, even though made as a B-movie, is great.
I haven´t read the comics at all.
But the worst thing that bothers me a lot every time I watch this movie IS the animation of Malebogia (The Devil).

Every time he has a line then you see a sort of wolfs head with an open mouth with ABSOLUTELY NO KIND OF MOVEMENT of the beasts lips when he's talking.

Nearly everything else made with CGI is almost perfect - given the fact that this movie came out in 1997.

But WHAT THE *beep* is up with the CGI-version of Malebogia EACH AND EVERY time he speaks???

Did they run out of money or did they have a time schedule to keep???

That's the worst thing that bothers me about this movie.
Am I alone in this wiev????

Otherwise I like this flick - given the fact that it was released in '97

Mortal Kombat 2 is a lot better than Spawn. It definitely has bad acting and story, but at least the special effects and non-human characters looked a lot more believable than Spawn.

Not sure if this has been answered so here it goes: In the comics Malebolgia communicated via telepathy which is why his mouth doesn't really move. They didn't make this clear at all in the movie so I'm sure a lot of people were confused/laughing.

I understand that they were going for a telepathic way of speaking, but the effect fails cause it doesn't sound like that. The devil sounds like he is in the same room as Spawn, as they both have the same room reverb effects on their voices. And the mouth does move awkwardly during when he speaks telepathically so it looks off.

If the devil kept his mouth closed the whole time, and maybe throw some different reverb on his voice to suggest that Spawn is hearing it in his mind, then it would be more convincing.

It's a strange instance of a big movie like this having the sh!ttiest cgi I can remember and still being watchable. It's almost Roger Corman in it's execution. But the concept of Spawn is so cool, that the movie floats. John Leguizamo's clown is a great character.

Not sure if anyone said this but the reason his lips don't move is because he speaks telepathically, like in the comics. That aside I don't think it looks too bad considering the date. It did get the best special effects for that year (or something like that.)

Demons communicate through telepathy. It's explained in the comics and in the animated series.

Which is funny, since in the end of S1 Clown is mad that Spawn didn't kill Billy Kincaid and turns into Violator who clearly says with its mouth "You made a *** deal!"

reply

for the life of me I can't seem to think of a 3 letter word that could come before deal that makes sense... unless it's a homo remark.

reply

Yeah, Spawn's cape looked AMAZING, ditto for Clown, but the way Malebolgia looked in here was horribly done. It's a shame that they put the effects on that on the backburner. It just looked horrible, looked like an evil dog, the creepy dog from John Carpenter's The Thing and that man-faced dog in Invasion of the Body Snatchers looked scarier than that. Seriously!

you realize that's because they are both voiced by Frank Welker, right?

reply

Are you serious?! Wow. Good catch my dear wolf knight.

reply

But Frank Welker is known in his industry as a "voice god." He's talented enough to come up with a voice that doesn't sound like Dr. Claw. If that's what the director wanted, though, that's another story.

I agree with people that say it was probably a budget issue. The open mouth might of been because of Telepathy but I think they could of made a better reference to it in the movie.

The Malebolgia? Yes, my friend thought he looked like a Muppet from Fraggle Rock. His mouth didn't move at all as I remember.

Exactly.
