Why all American movies have the same message??

I didn't expect much of this movie, because of the low rating on IMDB, but I enjoyed watching it a lot. I am fan of SF movies, especially Post-apocalyptic movies. And this movie had very nice atmosphere and I'd been entertained a lot whole time. I liked this movie much better than another similar movie of Mr. Costner - Waterworld. But, the ending was very disappointing. WHY all American movies must have a propagandistic message in their movies? Aren't they sick of it themselves? It's very nationalistic, I'd say way too much nationalistic. I think the movies would be much better without such propaganda. Anyone with same opinion? The scene of the statue was also too much. Terrible ending.

I don't think it's propaganda on a political level. Rather studio heads know that a movies with a "happy ending" fare better at the box office than movies with dark or ambiguous endings.

Thus the real propaganda is "money is good" not "the U.S. always prevails."

I liked Waterworld better than Postman. Partially also (but not only) because of that propaganda.

"Propaganda: Information, esp. of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view"

Exactly how is this movie then propaganda? The closest thing you can claim to be of a political cause or point of view is the notion that America in general is worth fighting for. And given the alternative depicted in the movie, that of living in squaller under a tyrant, I'd say America would seem MORE than worth fighting for to these people. Nobody in this movie is saying that the American way is the only way, or that other countries out there all have it wrong. The message is simply that 1) Freedom (in general, no specifically American freedom) is worth fighting for and 2) A relatively free democracy is better than a tyrannical dictatorship.

And why is the scene of the statue too much? Is it that you don't believe the characters should have erected a statue in the first place, or that the filmmakers shouldn't have shown the statue? Given what others have done to get statues and other monuments made in their image in America's history, I'd say that Costner's character was very deserving of a statue. Are you telling me that in what ever country your from, nobody would erect a statue for a person that basically lead the people of that country to freedom and generally improved everybody's way of life?

Whats wrong with National Pride???? If other Country's wish to make Movie portraying themselves in a good light, so be it...If this were a Movie with A Black Message, no one would have a Problem, Same goes for other Ethnic Groups, or Country's..I know it is not the same exact thing, but still...I love my Country, and like Movies that portray The American way as good..I don't have any Problem with British movies, Like the Triffods, or Assuie Movies that portray them in a good light..To each his own I guess..Great Ending...

**SPOILER ALERT**

I enjoyed the movie and it's message. I like the fact that the American Ideal triumphs in the end. I think there may be a time in the very near future when movies like THE POSTMAN will probably be banned or ridiculed by evil people who would like this movie banned.

More Americans should be proud of their heritage than that plastic american patriotism.

It is a cumulative process. No one single movie will build up America's self-esteem. THE POSTMAN is one movie that does that in a small, incremental way. The same way Stephen Simon's Spiritual Cinema Circle collected a diverse selection of movies with the common them of spiritual development gave hundreds of movies that fell through the cracks a new life and new audiences, similarly can there be a collection of movies collected under a American Patriot theme. This would include ALL American stories. Not just a "displaced European" theme.

Disagree about The Postman being much better than Waterworld (I love them both equally), but agree about the cheesy patriotic ending.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)
