Orion's Belt?
Who refers to a collar as a belt? He may have been an alien but he spoke perfect english.
Annoying and stupid.
I still love this film, though.

I think it was meant to be code. Also they're aliens, so maybe collars are belts to them.
shareAhhh, yes. It makes perfect sense for the alien trying to stop the bugs from taking over the galaxy to use a secret code so that the one entity who might be able to stop the bugs would have to work out some stupid riddle before being able to do what needed the fuck the get done.
You must be a scholar. Such a well thought out theory could only come from a person of high intellect.
Let's establish some basics:
The cat's name was "Orion".
The "galaxy" was "on Orion's belt".
Humans never refer to a collar as a belt.
I have never heard it once. It is not a thing, AFAIK.
Using the term "belt" when it is on his cat's collar is asinine.
Had he said "on my cat's collar" or "on Orion's collar", or "on my fucking cat", basically anything else....
It is a stupid and contrived plot point.
Orion's belt is an asterism in the Orion constellation, there would be no confusion as to where the galaxy was if they said it was on the collar. The movie would be over in 5 minutes. Orion's belt makes astronomical sense.
shareJFC...
shareWhat? You are the one bitching that it doesn't make sense. It's a science fiction, comedy movie and you are complaining about semantics when the dying, little alien, living inside a mechanical human who probably learned english as a second language says belt and not collar. The confusion is to where the galaxy is, is the riddle that makes the movie FFS.
shareHonestly, it's not like English is the character's first language, probably more like the 10,000th!
He spoke PERFECT English in every other scene.
Your excuse is that English was not his first language, but he was clearly proficient at it.
Anyone with an IQ above room temperature does not refer to a collar as a belt.
You can try to rationalize it all you want, but it makes zero sense and was clearly done to create a mystery and drive the plot. Unfortunately, it was done in a really stupid and implausible way.
It's a fucking play of words.
The constellation, the collar, the belt, the cat. It's a fucking pun, stop being dense and complaining about something like this ffs.
Maybe he was afraid someone listens and wanted to make it a ... "code"

Why would an entity determined to stop the bugs from interstellar domination use a joke to convey vital information to the one and only entity that could stop it?
You are literally retarded as far as I can tell from this post.
I truly mean this; Seek professional help. You are literally(not figuratively) insane(dumb enough to be considered insane).
Watch the fucking scene again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJCCUdK7PiU
He obviously has problems speaking and finding his words. He even uses "contest" when he wanted to say "War"..
Even worse, HE DOESN'T even say BELT, will smith says belt from something that the alien was trying to say. Like BE .. BE ... what's the word ... and the cat HAS a BELL shaped object on it's collar.
So you are a fucking moron and YOU are the retarded one.
Have you ever seen the movie?? You moronic imbecile retard.
He was dying and struggling to speak, not find the words.
You are daffy.
Watch again the video.
HE LITERALY SAYS "WHAT IS THE WORD?".
Fucking idiot.
And again, he NEVER said "belt" he said "be... be... what is this word?" and Will Smith jumped to belt, even tried "bed".
The fuck man, are you that dumb????
I have always heard "Beh... beh... that is where".
Then J says "Bed? Belt? The Galaxy is on Orion's belt?"
And the alien nods.
Well, what can I say ... my English sucks so I always watch all the movies with subtitles.
And in the movie he literally says "What is word?" (just checked now)
Probably as he was dying his mind was not quite oxygenated and he was confused.
As I was saying: literally 10 seconds before he was using “contest” for “war”. Clearly his verbal skills were impaired …
Subtitles are very, very, often wrong. It is something that rather annoys me.
However, I looked it up(the script) and you are correct.
It looks like my misunderstanding of the dialogue was the source of confusion.
Thank you for answering my question. I can put this to rest now.
It was his little joke. You know, JOKES, the things that other people find funny but which just irritate you?
shareLMFAO!
Your theory is that the alien trying to save the world(and potentially the universe) from control by the bugs, was "his little joke".
Congrats on making my point even more paramount.
FYI people involved in life-and-death situations do use humor as a coping mechanism, and that there is no such thing as a situation 21too serious for a little joke.
Of course, you wouldn't know that, living under a bridge and jumping out at people the way you do.
Yup, you are brain-dead.
