I've seen Donnie Brasco probably 10 times and the scene where they bash the Japanese guy in the tiolet of the Japanese restaurant never gets any easier for me. Everytime I mention this to others who have seen this film, I get the impression that nobody else is as affected by the scene as me. Anyone else find that scene DEEPLY disturbing?
The scene doesn't disturb me, it's some of the Tony Soprano wannabe gangstaz on this board who think mafia is just misundaztood, all their actions justified as long as they follow da "omerta" or whatever, they're the ones who disturb me deeply! I don't think they really get the point of The Sopranos, Casino, Goodfellas, The Godfather and Donnie Brasco.
Yo, you guys so badass. You gonna bust a cap in my ass now?
did he deserve that beating? no. oN the other hand he heard donnies dad was killed and didnt care, the reason he couldnt give them a table god knows why. For all they know Mr mottos dad killed donnies dad.
I think it's disturbing by how prolonged it is. Most films would show only a few seconds so the viewer gets the overall idea but this film dragged it out.
And just when we thought it couldn't get worse...someone throws a barrel on the poor bastard. Bet he wished he hadn't gotten out of bed that morning.

Yes, I find this scene disturbing. One of the reasons why is because it is so random, he's lying on the bathroom floor as he's being kicked and punched, his face is a bloody mess and the noises he's making sound like one of the guys in "STAR WARS"when they get hit with a lazer beam. When I was a little kid there was a scene in the movie "THE TOXIC AVENGER"where these teens go joyriding in their car to go run down victims. They see this little kid riding his bike and knock him off and then back up crushing his head. The two girls get out and take pictures, that was a scene that disturbed me really bad when I was kid. There's a scene in "TOTAL RECALL"where Arnie is running up a crowded escalator chasing after the bad guys. One of the guys turns and fires his machine gun at Arnie tearing a teenage kid to shreds, arnie uses him as a shield and then lets his body crowd surf all the way down the escalator. Something about innocent people in random scenes getting killed or brutalized has always disturbed me and I usually like blood and gore.

Yeah, me too. The heroes usually know what they're signing themselves up for, which can't be said for the luckless bystander out for his morning jog or whatever.
another thing that made the Japanese guy scene so memorable was the build up. They're just at the restaurant and everything's okay til Donnie starts freaking out over the shoes. the other gangsters are frustrated, just wanting to sit down and eat. Then D tells the story about his dad getting killed and they slowly become more symapthetic until Sonny makes a decision - D can keep his shoes. The waiter insists, Sonny quietly threatens hi, waiter guy persists. By that stage, you know something bad is going to happen, but you doubt the gangsters would do anything in a crowded public place. Then they grab the waiter, force him into an empty room and the beat-down commences...

Yup and I hated how they flashed outside the door of the bathroom and you can hear the beating going on inside and the Japanese man and woman at the table get up and leave quickly. That scene seems like something that would be in an exploitation film from the 70's or 80's. That would of sucked for sonny and his crew if that Japanese guy knew karate. Just kidding! Another scene I should mention is the scene in "ROBOCOP"when the goons take turns shooting Peter Weller. His body parts are being blasted off and they think it's hysterical. The look on his face is like an innocent little boy's as he's dying. Very disturbing.
I wasn't exactly disturbed by it, but then that's culture. But to those who keep talking about how the guy had it coming to him because he messed with Sonny, that's not the point. The point of the scene is really to show the beginning of Donnie's transition into their world, because it starts with him refusing to remove his shoes (secretly so that the other mobsters don't see his tape recorder), but it ends with Donnie earnestly beating up on this guy with the rest of the guys. I love it because it's so well-placed and subtle despite its brutality.
Donnie wasnt expecting the guy to get beaten, and when he was still able to walk away Donnie tried to break it up, but the little shlt hit Donnie so Donnie joined in.
