Thoughts On Cully?

What are your thoughts on the character Cully?

reply

I sort of felt sorry for the actress who played the part. The writers seemed to put very little effort into the character. She seems to spend all of her time whining, complaining and disapproving of Tom and/or the latest boyfriend.

I just re-watched "Blood Wedding" in which she was particularly unlikeable. Complaining about her fiance taking a gig, interrupting Jones with constant phone calls while he's working, and then being a total hypocrite by taking a gig herself!

In between times she complains about her wedding, about her dress and about the fact her dad is trying to investigate a double murder. She even complains as she walks down the aisle.

I wonder if the writers gave up on the character and decided to turn her into a total pain instead.

i thought that episode was quite funny actually. she's disgrunlted about her fiancee having to go and work immediately after they get martied, then the same thing happens to her.

She and her mother were both a great opportunity for popping out to put the kettle on. I can understand there was a need to give Barnaby a life outside of work, but they were both as dull as dish water.

The snake arrives, walking as if human.

Lots of Cully bashing going on which sort of baffles me.

Considering how abysmal most of the acting is in the series & how tedious most of the plots and scripts are, I found the Cully character (and Laura Howard) to be one of the only truly redeeming aspects of the program.

Back I go to trying to get through an episode without falling asleep. (it is one without Cully)

Couldn't agree more Bakerr51
While actress wouldn't be winning any BAFTAs, I really don't understand all the critique bordering on hate for her .
At least she was part of the Golden era of MM.

reply

Gotta say I agree with you, bakerr51. This is one of my favorite shows, and I always look forward to the (IMO) breath of air which Cully and mom bring to an episode.

She's nice enough, but I thought she was unnecessary. She didn't really add anything to the mysteries. I found it annoying that she would get upset if Tom didn't make it to her acting performances. She ought to realize that he would have been there if he could - he was not a disinterested father. And by then she should have understood the demands of his job. He never missed one just because he was hanging out at the pub or some such thing. But I can understand Joyce's frustration that he has to miss things, or plans get canceled or postponed. But again, it's the nature of the job.

I also didn't understand all Cully's job changes. It's as though they needed a librarian or whatever as a plot device, so hey - let's use Cully to explain give the background information on some person of interest.

Cully is rather annoying, and makes one or two expressions. Her mother is rather 2 dimensional. Even then, I enjoy the series and the genre. The movie setting and ambience add to the stories.

Howdy maha!
I enjoyed the series a lot and still watch it from time to time. But yes, Cully was annoying at times. I think I could also say that Joyce was often used only when the plot required it - I'm thinking of the episode (series 9, episode 1) where all of a sudden she's helping document older homes because a particular house ended up being the scene of a murder.
