Entire movie is bullshit
the guy made it up
shareI can believe that the boys suffered abuse, but you're right about the rest of the movie.
shareOld news.
shareThe way I look at it is it's no more bullshit than any other drama or courtroom drama.
Maybe it wasn't specific to him. But I'm sure abuse does and did happen.
?
I liked it but didn't know this was supposed to be nonfiction.
I worked nights for decades, pre-recording my programming and consequently avoiding many ads including trailers by zipping/skipping through them.
I can't remember why I chose to watch this but I did and ended up buying the incredibly inexpensive (for the time) DVD which oddly enough has a side one and side two.
They hadn't gotten that compression quite right yet.
The scene where they shoot kevin bacon's character in the bar is ridiculous.
The film always felt like fiction.
That was my favorite scene. I watch that one over and over. But it’s been a while. Italian restaurant, I think. They’re at the bar and John sees Nokes on his way to the restroom. Tommy (Crudup) at his best. Doesn’t he mention something about food. And they both go back and visit Nokes. And that’s all she wrote. Loved it.
And then later, you find out John and Tommy both die before age 30. Not a great film but one you can’t forget. Sexual abuse in a reform school. The Oscar nominated movie this year - Nickel Boys - is similar in content. If you thought Sleepers ridiculous, Nickel Boys definitely less so. Both are disturbing and gut wrenching and very real.
It was the way it was filmed. If two guys unload entire magazines while standing over some dude in a bar then he's not going to just remain seated upright there while you slowly shoot bullet after bullet into different parts of his body - the force alone will knock his ass off of that chair long before the 30th shot.
The guy who fabricated this movie probably told everyone that scene was all true as well. Utter horseshit.
I haven’t really been in a bar lately where I saw anyone unload anything into anyone and I’ve been to some really sleazy places. It just looked right to me. Who was the guy who fabricated this movie? Is there a guy who fabricated the movie - the writer? Barry Levinson. Do you mean the director? Barry Levinson. There was nothing more realistic and ahead of its time than Homicide: A Life on the Streets.
shareThis film was promoted as a true story by the writer (played by Jason Patric), but it came out that it was all made up.
Same with 'Catch Me If You Can'.
I see what you mean - the author of the book that the movie was adapted from made up the abuse.
Like I said, it was not a great movie, but a great cast, a great director and writer - and it was compelling whether the original author of the book made stuff up or even if he hadn’t. What it wasn’t was, Catch Me If You Can. And that scene where Tommy and John meet up with Nokes years later was a great scene.
