Other movies that do a 180 half way through?

Topic.

reply

Not a 180 in the middle... but not a 180 ending ending either... just something in between:

Brazil.

Another one that almost-kinda applies (this is a SLOW 180, though) is Truman Show. :)

I know this is not what the poster intended but these movies sure change in tone/thematic and are sure to surprise... and this thread, though kinda fun, would be incomplete without these.

:p

i think Falling Down can be considered, starts with D-Fens just having enough and frustrated with life to full on bad guy, once his snow globe is destroyed he snaps and becomes the bad guy from being the one we was routing for at the beginning

most people here are trying to hard to find ones that fit. there are so very few movies that do this. the way to define it is can you cut the movie at some point and watch the first part stand alone and then the second part stand alone? fdtd you can because the first half is the escape of the gecko brothers. its a full story. they escape with a hostage get to the border need a new hostage and a way across the border. they use the family as a way across there is tension and resolution as they are home free in mexico. movie over short but solid escape movie.

second half people walk into a bar to wait for there friend. bar is run by vampires survival horror takes place and they escape at dawn. stand alone horror movie.

most horror movies dont count because the beginning is all just setting up the horror aspect. the beginning is not a self contained story because your always waiting for the horror aspect.

psycho works because the story of the women stealing and fleeing is self contained and then pretty much suddenly ends with her being murdered and now we have a new story and norman is the most important character.

hostel kinda works because the first half is really a teen sex comedy. although it doesn't really have a plot other than them trying to get laid so your kinda always waiting for the other shoe to drop. there really is no antagonist of any form until it makes the 180 so the first half still lacks something if you don't watch the second half. i suppose its resolution is them getting laid by the beautiful women.

the decent is close because there is no set up about the creatures until they suddenly start killing people.

dog soldiers would work if we didnt get the opening murder scene that gives away its not just some military movie.

predator would work if we didnt get the alien perspective early and the UFO opening.

now there are plenty of movies that have vastly different tones over the course of the film but i dont think that really counts because its generally not a complete and sudden change of the story, protagonist, and antagonist.

Adaptation?

Basically uses all the cliches that he talks about hating in the first 2/3's.

Jeepers Creepers. Totally

It was expected cause its based on history, but Titanic going from romance into a disaster film.

True Lies is a mix between action and comedy though the first half is interspersed.

Also Man on Fire has an abrupt switch when the girl is kidnapped.

I've read all of the posts! There are a few comments about people not really getting the 180 premise, which is probably true for some of the films listed here, such as The Descent, The Hole, Jaws, plenty of films where the introduction can be seen as character/situation establishment and build-up of suspense before terror strikes, but not really a 180 in the FDTD sense.

There are quite a few repeats of suggestions like Full Metal Jacket, which definitely has two different halves and could arguably be a 180. Depends how you interpret 180 - some people are re-establishing the term specifically as a change in genre, but the OP hasn't specified.

There have been a number of Kubrick suggestions (FMJ, Clockwork Orange, The Shining). Another Kubrick film that has mirroring between its two halves is Eyes Wide Shut. However, Kubrick did one of the most famous '180' films that hasn't been mentioned yet and it 180's the viewer at least twice -

2001: A Space Odyssey!!

The most famous jump cut in history.

The movie Sunshine does a 180. It starts as a story about people living on a space ship, dealing with realistic problems. It then turns into a supernatural thriller.

Rubber!

SPOILERS

It starts off as a... well, a movie about a telekinetic car tire. Then it 180s and becomes about being a movie aware that it's a movie, and trying to retain it's dwindling audience.

Not sure if this has already been said, but how about another Tarantino flick: Deathproof? Not only does it take like 45 minutes before you figure out the deal with Kurt Russel, but then you reset the whole flick with an entirely new set of victims! That's pretty innovative to say the least, if not a 180-type plot device.

I agree with Psycho and Full Metal Jacket. And of course From Dusk Till Dawn.

Here's mine favorites:
A Clockwork Orange - even this is movie about Alex life, but still was strange to see first 20-30 mins raping, stealing, killings and then all that is gone. I think is counting.

Groundhog Day - first 20minutes are comedy and then suddenly sci-fi and even drama comes to charge.

A Beautiful Mind - definitively deserve mention. First half is everything happy. We see John meeting wife, great job and meets some FBI agnets or so and then shock. His life goes to depression out of nowhere. He lose his mind, twist reveal and almost lose his wife.

The Crying Game - first half is about war and violence ,second part is about love.(hmm, let's say that way)

The Shawshank Redemption - maybe. movie about PRISON TIME with murderers. I mean first half is ok with showing how hard prison can be ,but second part is so happy that you even don't have feeling andy and company are doing time.

The Godfather - Only first movie. Two movies in one. Good Pacino and Bad Pacino.

A Pure Formality - ending was one of the biggest shocks i have ever seen in movies...

Frequency.

Starts out as a kinda cool, somewhat sappy movie about talking across time. About an hour in, it turns into a thriller about trying to catch a serial killer.

space odyssey and full metal jacket sorta do a 180 in the sense we are talkn bout

I can,t believe no one has mentioned Mad max beyond thunderdome.
The biggest "flip" film I,ve ever seen.
It starts out as an ok film, about Bartertown, with alot of dark photography and night shots, and some typical looking Mad max thugs, then halfway through turns into a friggin, kids film. The film suddenly looks all sunny, the tone of the film is like a family movie, the music is kid friendly, and right in the middle of the film after spending 45 minutes establishing the plot in Bartertown the pace stops dead to introduce a new plot about a tribe of children. The biggest wtf in the history of cinema. To this day I don,t look at it as one film, everything about the two halves are totally different.Even Max completely changes character in the second half and the action after a great fight in thunderdome becomes cartoonish.
The only other one I can think of is Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.
Starts out as a road movie about the two title characters, then they team up with the guys they,ve been running from and it turns into an heist movie.
But for me Mad Max 3 wins hands down.
I totally agree about Psycho and Full metal Jacket.

I'd say Predator. It starts off as a standard commando schwarzennegger flick and then a *beep* alien shows up and it turns into thrilling awesomeness

The Dude Abides

I have been through each post, sadly, and nobody has mentioned The Talented Mr Ripley. What starts off as a rather harmless drama very quickly turns into a thriller once Jude Law is killed off.

Maybe not a full on 180 degree change of direction like FDTD, but a noticeable change nevertheless.

As well as doing a 180, the vampires actually savethe film.

Richard Gecko's psycho-murderer-rapist-potential child molester is so rank that he nearly made me duck out of the film.
Compared to him, the vampires are light relief.

As Good as It Gets is another possible contender for inclusion in the 180 club - but it makes multiple leaps from one place to another, not just one detour in another direction.
