Hostel! the first half is funny !!!

Predator

Stop laughing, look at this movie it starts looking like a typical 80s Army action vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger then turns into a Sci/Fi Horror Rhriller.

Yeah, and he also played the guy outside the bar, giving his famous "pu**y" speech. Cheech Marin.

I think Psycho has to be the most solid example. I suppose for a movie to do this whole 'flip' the sirector really has to be intending it from the beggining, it dosent just happen in a slow progression. The begining of Psycho was a complete red herring and made the whole film all the more effective, too many of these examples have been twists not plot reverses.

I do think lost highway was excellent, and to a lesser extent mulholland drive, but that wasnt a very traditional reverse...

Donnie: [to his mother] How's it feel to have a wacko for a son?
Rose Darko: It feels wonderful.

True with Shawn of the Dead, but really the 180 really throws you off, its rather nice and surprising.

'Psychos DO NOT explode when SULIGHT hits them, I don't care how crazy you are!'

You guys are all idiots. Almost none of these movies you list does a "real" 180 flip like From Dusk Till Dawn.

A GOOD example of another movie that does a similar flip is Alien. First they do alot of nonsense and argue about what bonus they should have when they get back to earth. And then all of a sudden, none of that was ever relevant. BAM, the dinner table-scene changed the whole thing and you had another movie.

The end

i've always thought "something wild" was a great illustration of the 180.

in the high school reunion dance, as soon as liotta swoops up on the dancefloor... with his line "hey, baby," everything changes. mood, lighting, music, pacing... everything.

fantastic.

someone already said it but i totally agree, The Predator does an awesome 180

reply

Someone said Jeepers Creepers, I like that. Kind of like a psycho killer guy at first and then turns into a supernatural thing. Predator is another good one, From Dusk Till Dawn is maybe the best 180, and I do agree with A Clockwork Orange, it changes direction pretty good. Full Metal Jacket is another great one, and nobody's mentioned it, but The Shining is kind of similar. Jack makes a big round.

No, Shaun of the Dead was hilarious all the way through. After a while the humor becomes a bit more macabe than all that preceeded it but it was still fitfully funny on up to the end credits. Especially the whole idea that even a zombie can play video games, classic.

It actually occurred thirty minutes in (so about a quarter of the way through), but the film "Coup de Torchon" made a few abrupt changes; it went from having an ordinary sort of comedy to having very dark comedy, and the character changed from a pushover that everyone mocked to a quite possibly insane murderer.

reply

i gotta say, whoever said DEAD PRESIDENTS is right. The movie starts out sort of like a MENACE 2 SOCIETY kind of movie then turns into PLATOON, and then in the last act of the film its a KILLING ZOE caper film kind of movie. thats pretty strange.

And i also agree with LOST HIGHWAY. Weird, messed up movie.

I think most people totally misunderstood the meaning of a 180 turn in a film. Horror movies can't be a 180 turn just because it goes from nice and quiet to slasher film, that's how it's supposed to be. In this film, you actually think, this is a Tarantino-esque kinda film (like Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs) and then, out of nowhere, *beep* vampires.

Then again, I can't think of any film that has such a turn either. Whoever said Predator thought correct, but most people knew the turn before they saw it.

Any Lynch movie I guess counts because they don't really make sense so any part could be a "180"

full metal jacket..

kinda seemd liek 2 different movies...though both halves are very very good

Predator is a good example but it's not perfect they need to take out the spaceship scene in the beginning and the predator pointofview or at least juts the ship.

but let me ask you this what do you consider the turning point in predator?
Is it when Mac sees the alien/as soon as the first of the group gets killed?
or is it when arnie is alone with the predator?
