I always thought this was a remake of the same directors 1999 film "L A Takedown" , especially after watching said 1999 movie and seeing that the DNA is 99% the same.

shareNo. Both films have a ‘common ancestor’ which was Mann’s original idea. LA Takedown was a TV show, Mann made the pilot and it didn’t get picked up, so he retooled it into a mediocre TV-movie.
Later he wanted to have a proper stab at the original idea, and rewrote the LAT script with a new ending (plus numerous other changes) creating Heat, which did not trade on the earlier film’s reputation (and if anything I’m guessing Mann would rather audiences didn’t know about the previous attempt to manifest the idea)
Remakes as we know them today cynically trade on the success of previous properties and serve up lazy slop by a hack director, a very different situation.
DEN OF THIEVES is basically a remake of HEAT right down to the freeway shootout at the end
