I recently rewatched the series and have to say that Pierce Brosnan (a fine actor), I liked him in Remington Steele and Mama Mia, is just not James Bond. He is unconvincing and tepid.
My definitive ranking of Bonds:
Connery
Craig
Lazenby
Moore
Dalton
Brosnan
No, Quantum of Solace is one of the most misunderstood films. It had problems, mostly related to editing, but its much better than given credit for. Now that Craig's run is over, and I've seen all his Bonds, I think QoS is the second best Bond of his (after Casino Royale), which is a bit surprising because I didn't think very highly of it when I saw it for the first time.
The editing doesn't bother me as much as how boring the plot is. The Bolivian locations are ugly, the villain is laughable. DAD while not a good movie, has some redeeming parts to it.
Disagree about the villain and plot. Doesn't need always to be a giant with metal teeth or a mad man with a plot to destroy the whole world. Quantum was a great criminal organization and they should have continued with it. Instead they sadly got rights back to Spectre and Blofeld and ruined the storyline. Skyfall could and should have been a standalone story, like Goldfinger between From Russia with Love and Thunderball. They had a good thing going, but they dropped the ball. No Time to Die was surprisingly good all things considered, but it had to deal with story set in two prior Sam Mendes pictures.
That's nice but many don't share your opinion. In a 007 magazine film poll, OHMSS was rated the greatest Bond film. Chris Nolan also considers it his favourite Bond film.
Nolan, one of the greatest filmmakers ever, considers it the best of the series. You might consider a poll "laughable" but its evidence that "most" people don't share your opinion on OHMSS.
You have a fine list.
Just give it some time and you will come around to realize i am right.
I think the issue is Brosnan is he is plastic looking, too pretty with no charisma and completely unconvincing as a tough guy.
Other than that, he is a good Bond.
Harry, did you know that several filmakers including Christopher Nolan covet On Her Majesty's Secret Service, going out of their way to obtain original prints? This is because it is cinematically shot. Also, the music was stolen in this film and used on the lesser No Time to Die.
When your tastes improve and mature, you will come around. Give it time lad.
I almost barfed when I read your list. I think you are mistaking inspired filmaking for a truly great film.
Whenever they change Bonds, there is anticipation.
Living Daylights was ABSOLUTELY a great debut for Dalton... but look at what he had to top...a tired and flacid A View to a Kill with a geriatric Bond, expectations were so low, so Living Daylights really shined. I agree it is a better Bond film but far from the best.
Casino Royale, fired on all cylinders that is unmatched by many other Bond films.
Dalton has more charisma than Brosnan, not saying much. He is tougher looking, but simply doesn't have the appeal.
Film performances are Subjective please I have gotten appreicate "Slow Scenes" I know good exposition dump from a bad one there is a reason why Skyfall is one the highest rated Bond films please bet you didnt half of these films also Kurosawa didnt redub it forces you too watch characters emotions and focus on dialogue once again please do lecture and i hate your holier than thou attitude.
Dalton is very British and belongs more on TV. He should be in a TV-remake of British Series Avengers where he belongs. He is more charismatic and rugged than Brosnan (not saying much), but just not leading man material. I agree - meh.
Craig is the best after Connery. You must be angered after the two frustrating dry -turds Spectre and the unforgivable No Time to Die (franchise killer). I know I am.
