Music ruins it abit
That annoying guitar music was wel used for sum parts, but the whole way through,it just got ridiculous and made it seem like a comedy.

shareI read in an interview with Jarmusch that Neil composed the score while watching the film all the way through...if that changes your perspective--or widens it. I thought it was quite a challenging and brilliant score, a complement to the film.
shareI could see why some might not like it, some like the music to fit its time period as well as add mood and character to scenes. I will say that Neil Young's score was unique and paired awesomely with the amazing visuals but for me it got annoying at some points. Sometimes he's just played blaring, greasy sounding notes, but at other times the music is very subtle and ambient. I can't imagine a different soundtrack to this film though, its a different kind of western. I wish the soundtrack matched the first scene all the way through.
shareThe music was great and not "loud" it was perfect IMHO. Quit being an old fart.
shareit was very annoying
weird movie

I can think of few movies where the score complemented the film as well as "Dead Man". I went out and bought the soundtrack immediately after seeing the film. It's a masterpiece, as is the movie.
sharei'm older and grew up with csn&y. i really have no affection for neil young...but this background music is an exception.

5 years too late, but I agree 100%. The music is used way to much.
you are an idiot that knows nothing.
shareYou understate. I'd say it comes close to sabotaging it completely. Music should be entirely supportive and under no circumstances detract from the filmography (which is excellent in this movie). If you want music supported by narrative, go to the opera. If you want music per se, go to a performance or recital. No sane person goes to the movies primarily for music. There are great movie music composers, such as Ennio Morricone, but they are great precisely because they understand that their job is to enrich the film experience, not to undermine it with noisy displays of ego.
shareHumbly disagree. I think the score perfectly complements the film. In many areas of the movie, it is actually very subtle and barely there. I mean, can you imagine E.T. without the soaring music, especially at key moments? If you argue that Young's score undermines "Dead Man", you would have to argue that all film music undermines the developments onscreen.
Simply not true.
So rightly said.
The score just killed the otherwise nearly dreamy pace.
When somebody as popular (and drunk) as Neil Young decides to get away with such lame 'effort', no wonder legions will consider it a masterpiece, daring and appropriate.
.
Culture is a sad, sad thing.
Will not watch it ever again, the score is way too irritating for someone not fan of electric guitar like me (yeah, that happens to some humans).
