What an awful movie, and Carey and Jones sucked

Jim Carey and Tommy Lee Jones were both miscast, and they both did a lousy job--Val Kilmer was fine as Batman, but Joel Schumaker really screwed this up, as he did Batman and Robin

Perfect Superhero Casting Choices Wasted On Terrible Comic Book Movies

Calling Batman: Forever a terrible film is probably a tad harsh, but it isn't exactly great. It's riddled with flaws from top to bottom, but it's worth pointing out that there were some really good castings in it too.

Val Kilmer was a worthy replacement for Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, while Jim Carrey was... Jim Carrey as the Riddler. A case could be made for both having been mishandled in the film, but there's the curious case of Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face that deserves extra attention.

For most of the film, Jones plays Big Bad Harv' as though he were the Joker's demented little brother, and it's painful to watch. In keeping with the neon extravagance of Joel Schumacher's Batman, however, it works perfectly, and that's not even what makes his performance such a waste.

The first ten minutes of Batman: Forever are an assault on the senses, as we're treated to Two-Face holding up a bank and terrorising a helpless guard. It is chilling stuff, and showcases what Jones could have done if he hadn't spent the rest of film trying to outdo Carrey's character.

Hot Take: Batman Forever is not that bad

I think Forever is unfairly referred to in the same light as Batman And Robin (which absolutely is one of the worst films ever made). Forever is truly not that bad. It has some misguided elements, yeah. It’s a shame Billy Dee Williams wasn’t brought back for Two-Face (although Tommy Lee Jones does deliver a very good, albeit wildly campy performance). The Batmobile is absolutely hideous and Chris O’Donnell is annoying at best. But there is some great stuff in the movie. Val Kilmer is a genuinely good Batman and an especially good Bruce Wayne. There are some fantastic shots in the film and the overall design is grand, campy and very entertaining to see. Jim Carrey also delivers a fantastic performance as The Riddler, and considering Jim is one of my favourite actors and The Riddler is one of my favourite comicbook villains, the combination is perfect.

I think the film works within its own universe. Yes, it’s campy, garish, unrealistic and wacky. But sometimes, that’s what the Batman universe needs. The super-edgy grim-dark and gritty Bat-verse that has taken over interpretations of the character for pretty much the past 15 years gets really old and boring very quickly. Just look at Bats’ most famous villains. A psycho clown, a monocle-wearing mobster with a bird obsession, and a green question-mark-clad puzzle-fixated prankster. Sometimes it’s okay to let the wackiness of Batman’s universe out.

Totally agree on that front. Jones and Carrey should not have been cast.

Val Kilmer is just awesome as Batman. I think his Bruce Wayne was the best out of the 4 movies/3 Batmans in that universe, and his Batman voice was the best in my opinion. Keaton was in his 40s in Batman returns and just didnt strike me as a good looking playboy. The Bat suits were just great. It had the tint of yellow oval. The suit was black but shined with color in certain scenes. Everyone can complain about nipples but it never bothered me as a kid. You have fake abs, peks, why not nipples. I dunno why so many people make fun of that and pretend it's what ruined batman but it didn't.

Robin's origin was pretty spot on. They used Two face instead of Tony Zuco. I would argue and say if you had another villain it would be too much. Robin being older I think is better. I want to say he's 17 cause he's dropped off at Bruce's place from social services. I don't know why people want him to be a kid but as a 10 year old you look up to older kids and think they're cooler. I mean, biker teen with a leather jacket, kids ate that shit up in the 90s. The suit later is darker and I think is acceptable. Again, don't care about nipples, you have fake abs on there already. The story of him wanting revenge and Bruce trying to stop him and teach him is definitely batman. Love it. I'm a Robin lover.

The villains in this movie. Jim Carrey does a great job. A lot of people say he's frank Gorshin from B66 but to me he's just being Jim Carrey. Riddler to me is smart which he is and tells riddles. I don't need my Riddler serious, I can take him either way. It works. Now two face... Say what you will but at least they got the origin comics accurate more than Nolan's was. I love dark knight two face but give credit where it's due.

A lot of the casting choices in Forever and B&R were pretty distracting like Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Clooney especially since they're associated with something else.

reply

Not should why WB wanted Schumacher when he's never made a kid's film or action adventure films.

I thought they were funny as The Riddler and Two-Face. However, Jim's costumes really looked silly, particularly when running around in the question mark pajamas.

reply

Not me I thought they were annoying especially with those cackling noises they kept making

And Carrey was just playing Ace Ventura in a Riddler costume

reply

This true of any of the Forever and B&R actors they were playing themselves in Batman character costumes.
