How much worse would this film be....

....without the narration by MF?

20% worse?

40%?

It would definitely take a hit. That voiceover adds a LOT.

It would’ve still been a legendary film

33% as Morgan Freeman definitely made the movie with his narration, I also loved Tim Robbins, Bob Dunton and Clancy Brown's performances.

reply

Many good performances in this film.

I didn't like how they cheated the audience with his narration in the end. That was my main complaint about this movie, otherwise it's quite good, but not the best movie ever like the IMDb rating suggests. I'm not even sure it belongs to top250 list at all. The Dead Zone and Dolores Claiborne are much better Stephen King adaptations. It seems that movies based on Stephen King books make better drama than horror, LOL.

Can you expand on that?

Regarding top 250, I agree - it's not. It's a top 100 of *mine* but only because it's like a comfort food of movies, but a lot of the top 100 favorites of mine wouldn't be on anyone's top 250. Shawshank? I like it - when it's on I usually watch it. From a story, artistic, or film making standpoint it's not a top 250.

I felt that I was led to believe MF's narration/voice-over was telling the whole story of Tim Robbins' character. But it only started retroactively telling what really had happened after the big twist. Of course this was a major spoiler issue and I guess this was the only way they could do it if they used a voice-over telling audiences what has happened. That was my initial reaction to it some 30 years ago, anyhow. I wasn't very impressed with the big twist like everybody else seemed to be at the time.

Why is it a problem that the voiceover takes place after the twist?
