My guess she was a good-time girl who saw in him an opportunity to improve her lot and recognized that, in his sickly state, he could use an assistant and nurse. He both liked and needed her.

shareThanks. She claims to be his woman and he claims to be her meal ticket (but nothing more). Doc doesn’t seem to think she cares for him beyond his money and lacks affection for her. She’s shocked by his callousness. It still seems possible she cared for him more than he realized or cared to acknowledge but, if so, the feeling evidently wasn’t mutual.
