Most overrated film in history?

I saw this on its release and in spite of Liam Neeson, it has so much to be desired. Dumbed down script, made up dialogue, no subtlety. All makes for a mediocre film that doesn't do justice for such an important topic. And all these issues I lay at the feet of Steven Spielberg. Face it, his only good film was Jaws. Instead I recommend War and Remembrance and Shoah.

I think what we have here is the most excessive use of hyperbole on all of the Internet!!!!!!

Spielberg is a popcorn director who has never been good at subtlety and yes, the film is full of his usual superficiality, overstatement and heavy-handedness, but Titanic is way worse.

reply

True, I gave Titanic the worst film award right when I saw it in the theater! As for Schinler Spielberg is not up to the task of such an important subject. No Dan Curtis or Claude Landzmann he.

reply

No , this film is a masterpiece. I ranked it 15th of all time

I agree with you. I absolutely cannot stand Terry Gilliam as a director and human being but I 100% agree with his criticism of this movie. The Holocaust was about the victims, not the survivors. I mean, seriously, imagine if they did a 9/11 movie where 95% of the action revolved around the guys who had hacked their way out of one of the elevators and it ends with them safely escaping the towers and running into the arms of their loved ones.

And thank for mentioning Shoah. Shoah is one of the reasons why I found this movie patently offensive on every level. When it comes to capturing a dramatic event, you can't do better than a documentary that not only has interviews with the victims themselves but is shot on location.

Also, people are going to call me out for being cynical, but I know in my heart of hearts that this was Oscar bait. I can't go into details without boring people. All I'm going to say is that if you knew Spielberg's contentious history with The Academy,
Schindler's List as Oscar bait was cynically calculated. It was him basically daring The Academy to not give him an Oscar after they had shafted him so many times. 🙄

Schindler’s List is a gentle Holocaust movie, it implies hope and some sort of salvation from the events. It never gets too nihilistic. It is like a Frank Capra melodrama in that respect.

No, it's an incredible movie, if you can stand to watch anything so gut-wrenching. Absolutely terrifying and real, with only the smallest touches of cinematic flair, used to give more emotional impact to certain scenes.

The movie changed my life, or contributed to a great big life change that took place about that time, where I left cube hell for the helping professions. Seriously, I saw the film for the first time and asked myself why the hell I was wasting my life surviving by with a job I hated, when I could be helping other people. And yes, the change was made.

Good for you, Otter. Definitely an incredible film. One that’s absolutely devastating, but also beautiful.

Oh you’re so silly.
