I agree with you. I absolutely cannot stand Terry Gilliam as a director and human being but I 100% agree with his criticism of this movie. The Holocaust was about the victims, not the survivors. I mean, seriously, imagine if they did a 9/11 movie where 95% of the action revolved around the guys who had hacked their way out of one of the elevators and it ends with them safely escaping the towers and running into the arms of their loved ones.
And thank for mentioning Shoah. Shoah is one of the reasons why I found this movie patently offensive on every level. When it comes to capturing a dramatic event, you can't do better than a documentary that not only has interviews with the victims themselves but is shot on location.
Also, people are going to call me out for being cynical, but I know in my heart of hearts that this was Oscar bait. I can't go into details without boring people. All I'm going to say is that if you knew Spielberg's contentious history with The Academy,
Schindler's List as Oscar bait was cynically calculated. It was him basically daring The Academy to not give him an Oscar after they had shafted him so many times. 🙄
