I saw this on its release and in spite of Liam Neeson, it has so much to be desired. Dumbed down script, made up dialogue, no subtlety. All makes for a mediocre film that doesn't do justice for such an important topic. And all these issues I lay at the feet of Steven Spielberg. Face it, his only good film was Jaws. Instead I recommend War and Remembrance and Shoah.
His only good film was Jaws? So Raiders of the Lost Arc, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, Minority Report, Catch Me if You Can all don't exist?
I agree with the OP. Jaws was Spielberg's only real good movie, because it was him doing his job as a director, which is to deliver a well told, entertaining story without any manipulative, pandering bullshit designed to win The Academy and masses over, or pretentious flourishes "telegraphing" a brand or what a great and awesome director he is ("I'm pure magic and childhood wonder," "I'm Mr. Academy Award").
That's my issue with him. He doesn't make movies. He makes "product." Spielberg's approach to film reminds me a lot like how Steve Jobs operated. Apple was not nearly as innovative or creative as people think it was but everyone think it was the most innovating, daring company on the face of the earth because Jobs knew how to design and market his products a certain way to invoke warm and fuzzy feelings about Apple as a "brand".
