The best 10 minutes ever filmed?

I've had this conversation a few times with friends, but for me the sequence starting with Duncan's sacrifice and ending with Magua's death is the most brilliant thing I've ever seen on screen. The combination of stunning visuals, a perfect score, and about five very visceral emotional hits.. it just kills me every time.

Granted I haven't seen everything I should have in the world of film, but if you can point me to something else this great, please do :)

Actually my best favorite of this movie is the Messenger scene, from the moment Hawkeye prepared the guns until the end when he shot his 3rd shot (5th if count Uncas's).

I haven't watched the movie, although I like its score a lot. :D
Anyway, I think this scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCZ3SN65kIs is one of the best scenes ever made, not sure if it is better than the one you mentioned, but it definitely is as good as that one. You be the judge here :P

Watch Last of the Mohicans. Although I LOVE the LoTR trilogy, it is not even a contest. Do note though that the film is slow, very slow in parts, but those last minutes make up for it a million times.

It was on last night and yes it is definitely in my top five scenes. It can't really be categorized as a chase scene but it definitely manages to cram in a sea of emotions in a condensed time allotment.

Our hate for Duncan turns to sheer sorrow as he does the right thing but suffers greatly while we listen to his screaming.

Hawkeye taking him out of his misery.

Uncas going on his own in the face of death.

Uncas taking on the whole lot of them and manages to kill a few before succumbing to Magua.

Jodie's nanchalant plummet.

Hawkeye and Chingachook's demolition of the warrior convoy.

The Dad just totally $%!* up of Magua...he took him apart and just seconds after he had killed his son. Justified!!

Score and scenery are impeccable! Yes, exceptionally done!!

It's certainly ranks up there, IMHO. The use of the music with the chase scene really accentuates the action, much like the music in the Mexican Standoff near the end of "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly does.

It *is* a remarkable scene.

Easily one of the best climaxes in film

I'm right with you guys.... I'm in my early 60's and a cinephile my entire life. LotM ranks amoung the best films made, in my opinion. And that last 10 minutes is just freaking amazing and powerful. Always gets me.

I'd have to agree it's in my top 10. The cinematography is also amazing. And the score adds so much. SO many others are up there though! The following are just some examples:
1) In 1981's Excalibur, the scene near the beginning after a young Arthur pulls the Excalibur from the stone, goes to his only supporter's besieged castle, the Father of Guenevere, Leondegrance, to help him fight against the nobleman who are against Arthur as the new King. The Nobleman are laying siege to Leondegrance's Castle, led by Uryens. Arthur leaps from a high battlement, landing on Uryens in the Castle's moat. Arthur offers mercy to Uryens if he swears an oath to him. Uryens reminds Arthur that he is only a Squire and he will not swear an oath to a squire. Arthur, realizing he is correct, gives Excalibur to Uryens and asks him to Knight him. Above, Merlin is amazed at what is happening, as he is of course controlling Arthur's destiny. Uryens takes Excalibur, hesitates, then Knights Arthur, saying "I swear allegiance to the courage in your veins. So strong it is, its source must be Uther Pendragon". Relive it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyCParQTtnE
2) The final 10 minutes of "Unforgiven" when William Munny drinks the whiskey riding back into Big Whiskey to avenge Ned. The rain, the score, the empty whiskey bottle hitting the ground. Then William entering the saloon, shooting Skinny for "decorating his bar with his friend". Everyone scattering because a "real gun fighter" is in their midst. Everything about that scene is awesome.
3) The scene from "No Country for Old Men" when Lleweyln goes back to the drug deal massacre scene to give the Mexican water, and gets chased by the pit bull. He jumps into the water, swims like crazy, and the pit bull swims after him. Lleweyln climbs out of the water, takes apart his wet gun, blows into it to dry it, reloads, and shoots the dog just as it jumps at him. Wow. I literally rewinded that 3 times the first time I saw it. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=no+country+for+old+men+pitbull&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail&mid=A4D854CEBF7CDEEE94C8A4D854CEBF7CDEEE94C8

A Dog's Life for Me

Def. in my top 10 too and nearer the top.

How about the scene in "Zulu" as the British soldiers awaited the arrival of the impis, only first hearing in the distance what one Officer described as "sounding like a train coming", then slowly the masses of warriors rose over the high spur above Rorke's Drift, and the awe-struck,fearful look on the small numbers gathered in the redoubt to defend it. Priceless. Talk about tension, I was on the edge of my seat as a lad, heart going like an express!

I think it is but that's my humble opinion and the fact that it's my favorite movie. Amazing visuals, the lack of dialogue fits perfect, the raw emotion, the music....stunning. When I have people watch this for the first time, I always tell them that the last 10 minutes of the film/last scene (not withstanding Chingachgook's farewell and speech) are the most amazing shots and ending you will see. I put it up there in front of the helicopter scene in Apocolypse Now, Roy Batty's death (Tears in Rain) in Blade Runner, and Sgt. Elias's Death with Adagio for Strings in Platoon.
