How do you guys feel about Trump being removed digitally? ?

Reports lately have indicated that due to the Capitol insurrection on 6 January, 2021 with fascist thugs loyal to Trump, Disney+ will digitally remove Trump in Home Alone 2 and the 90 year old Christopher Plummer will be placed in the role instead, much as he replaced Kevin Spacey in that awful flop from Ridley Scott. I'm a little uneasy when people start tampering with films like George Lucas diid. I personally would prefer the one with Trump not because I like him but because that is how it was originally made well before anybody knew he would turn out to be America's very own Mussolini. What do you guys think about tampering with films that have material which IN THE MOMENT is considered too offensive to be seen?

[Postscript 12/9/2021 -- This post was written in early 2021 after the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol which was the closest the US has come to having outright fascists take over this country in a manner no different than the Nazis. There was in fact talk of removing Trump from Home Alone 2 at that time but that has since died down. Still, I leave this post up here since it touches on subjects like censorship. Many feel artists and their works should be "canceled" (meaning, disappeared from the culture) if they fail to conform to modern ethics which so many believe are so much more enlightened than previous eras. For instance, woke "comedian" Hannah Gadsby morally objects to notorious lothario Picasso and his penchant for women much younger than himself. His art doesn't matter. She calls him "Picasshole" and supports his disappearance from the pantheon of great artists based solely on his sexual proclivities. The #MeToo fanatics in the US and UK have successfully canceled Roman Polanski''s "J'Accuse" due not to the film but his legal issues from over 40 years ago in the US. The film has found no distributor in English-speaking countries. The idea of canceling any artist or censoring supposedly objectionable footage (even as innocuous as Trump's cameo in Home Alone 2) is a subject worth discussing.]

I think Kevin Spacey should be digitally removed from all his films.

reply

The Trump cameo was never removed on the Disney plus version of the movie.

It's always good to have discussion on bullshit. It's like when all the marvel fanboys argue and get butthurt on random rumors.

reply

Frankly, I think it's stupid. I know a lot of people hate Trump and his presidency but I feel he should still be in this movie as a cameo. He is a popular New York City figure.

Something I keep hearing about them removing not only from this movie but other movies is footage of the Twin Towers. I hate this too. I like seeing footage of them in a lot of my favorite childhood movies. I don't want that footage of them to be removed just because it reminds people of that terrible day, September 11th, 2001.

I don't care for it tbh. I never *loved* it to begin with, but that was a different time, when he was a harmless icon, and it's just part of the movie. I did not like him as President, not at all. I won't get into it, just saying my stance as I feel it's relevant to the post. I'm just not a fan of censorship in general, like how after 9/11 they digitally removed the Twin Towers from some things. His cameo was a fun little thing, it was harmless, he wasn't overly promoting himself, he was the owner at the time so it just made sense. While I agree with "let's not reward them with great careers," I feel like it's an extreme example of cancel culture. Like okay, I'm no longer a Kevin Spacey fan, but I still love American Beauty. And Germany hasn't attempted to redeem itself by pretending Hitler didn't exist. And yeah, nervous about Lucas-like over-tampering with anything. So pretty much in agreement with you.

Fully agree. Trump was a new York Icon. It makes sense he was there. Taking him out shows me that Disney doesn't respect it's audience (let's not open that can of worms though).

reply

Yes!

reply

Despite me not being a big fan of Trump I don't think it's right for them to remove Trump digitally out of the film, to me great movies like Home Alone 2 shouldn't be tampered with.

reply

I agree. Thank you.

It's totally absurd. If one is so triggered by a 5 second cameo then how do they handle life?

reply

True

Channel 7 Australia just screened Home Alone 2 tonight on free to air television and I can confirm that the Donald Trump cameo was completely cut out of the movie. Absolutely pathetic.

reply

Donald Trump's cameo was cut in Canada before he even ran for president. It had to do with run time, and it's really not essential to the plot. Perhaps it wasn't political and they just used the same cut.

reply

Yes it probably was the same cut used by Canadian Television that made international news for its omission of the Trump cameo. I'm still not sure I buy that it wasn't political, because Trump had already been despised by Liberals for a number of years before he actually ran for president. Also, the time thing doesn't make a lot of sense as his cameo was probably only about 20 seconds long and hardly drag the movie running time out. It might not have been essential to the plot, but the producers obviously wanted a cameo by Donald Trump in the film at the time and the cameo would be considered all the more significant now.

reply

It's soft.
