Why wasn’t Jack Lemmon nominated ?

The only acting nomination was Pacino, and as brilliant as he and the rest of the actors were it’s Jack Lemmon’s performance who for me is the heart and soul of the entire film and is the glue which holds it together.

He’s also the most memorable and even in pop culture they based a character in The Simpson’s on his portrayal here.

It’s one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

Agreed, he's almost too good in this movie. It doesn't even feel like you're watching a character.

So many good supporting performances in this movie that they probably cancelled each other out. But he certainly deserved a nomination. And when you look at the 1993 nominees his performance was better than anyone else on this list.
Jack Nicholson - A Few Good Men
Jaye Davidson - The Crying Game
Gene Hackman - Unforgiven (Winner)
Al Pacino - Glengarry Glen Ross
David Paymer - Mr. Saturday Night

David Paymer?! I like him and all, but give me a break.

What makes it worse is, Al Pacino was already nominated (and won) Best Actor that same year. It's a popularity contest I guess.

reply

Oh, right! For Scent of A Woman.

The Oscars can be such a crapshoot.

reply

But even for a popularity contest... Jack Lemmon is a legend. His last nomination was 1983, I would expect this to be a good moment for them to honor his career.

I totally agree that Jack Lemmon was the most memorable performance. Al Pacino was good also, but it was in the vein of other roles he had.

Still, Jack Lemmon already had 2 Oscars won, while Al Pacino (who is also a legend) hadn't won any until then.

reply

Mr. Saturday Night was about showbiz. Hollywood lap that up.

reply

It's true. Academy voters love navel-gazing.

reply

This main cast could have all been nominated in the supporting category, what a bunch!

Agreed, Lemmon was brilliant, this movie will be watched in 50 years by film school students eager to write a 'one room' drama for stage or screen

reply

You are absolutely correct Lemmon and the rest of the cast were fantastic!

Jesus christ they didnt give Shelley 'The Machine' Levene a nomination?! What the FUCK?! Those motherfuckers! They mustve gone like 'fuck the Machine'.. Fuck the Machine? you fuckin' cocksuckers FUCK THE MACHINE??! FUCK YOOU!!
