Keanu Reeves? Why?

Why the hell was Keanu picked for this film? His accent was absolutely terrible, and I could feel discomfort coming from him during his performance.

Gary Oldman was excellent. Hopkins superb. Rider pretty good. Keanu tried his best but just wasn't suited for the role. It's literally laughable how badly this casting choice was.

reply

The likes of Keanu in this film killed some suspension of disbelief with his fake British accent and Bill & Ted trademark.

reply

It was clearly a stunt casting tactic, "we need a young hot star".

Always best to go with a English, Australian or New Zealand actor in a English/British oriented role.

reply

Because seeing the most beautiful young man being molested by Dracula and his wives was hot!

He's perfect for the role, in the scenes where he doesn't speak.

reply

His character is supposed to be stuffy and awkward though, in that sense he works. I know there are other problems though.

reply

He was a heartthrob at the time whose star was on the rise.

He is very wooden but personally I find Hopkins’ over baked ham more distracting in the film.

reply

He was really, really bad. Winona wasn't entirely convincing either, but at least she made an effort. He didn't even look English and only had one expression on his face the entire movie.

reply

He's actually been in a couple historical movies before. Not sure why but I guess Coppola wanted to cast someone to draw in young women and teenage girls to the movie.

reply

I'd just love to hear Coppola's thought process: "Hmmmmm you know what my Dracula movie really needs, yeah one of the guys from Bill and Ted"
