Why the hell was Keanu picked for this film? His accent was absolutely terrible, and I could feel discomfort coming from him during his performance.
Gary Oldman was excellent. Hopkins superb. Rider pretty good. Keanu tried his best but just wasn't suited for the role. It's literally laughable how badly this casting choice was.

shareGoing back to '92 I always thought Keiffer Sutherland would've made an excellent Harker. Had the acting chops to pull off the role, could've handled the accent, more spine for the action, reasonable foil for Oldman and would've worked well with Ryder. If he'd been in the role as a younger man the film would've been even better.

YES, you are so right about that! When I first saw them, particularly the cut prologue scene, I killed over with laughter, not only because of Keanu's "performance", but even the original chapel scene when Oldman became Dracula was hysterical to me. Plus, Ms. Ryder's performance only seemed to ham up the scenes even more. No wonder they had to change it. It's funny, but I actually just watched those deleted parts a couple days ago and the result was still *beep* hilarious!

Kiefer would have been a solid choice, a step above Reeves for sure - would have probably elevated Winona's performance
If you went the young, naive couple route - River Phoenix or Ethan Hawke (22/23 at the time) would have knocked it out of the park
If you want someone that had equal chops to Oldman, Kenneth Branagh would be the choice
Coppola has stated that the studio pressured him into hiring Reeves, so they could have a current young male sex symbol in the flick. (He was a star on the rise at that time....) Coppola has expressed great regret and Reeves reportedly has said he regards the role as an embarrassment.

blah, blah, blah, blah.... try to say "I've seen some strange things already" and something with wolves and inferno with a strange english accent they had those days back then..... yeah I'm not ashamed that I'm totally fine Keanu was in this movie and you can blame him all for you want.... If I ever meet him I'll tell him he should not be ashamed cause he was doing his best. Others were very great and Keanu tried his best but not everyone can always deliver the best work everyday I'm not doing my best work everyday either.... well, sometimes it lasts for longer than just one day. You can say that he got a better paycheck but even sh** singers with not soo good music and lyrics receive million of dollars everyday.
